Dewa hosts Youth Circle to discuss sustainability

Dubai: The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) on Sunday hosted a brainstorming session with select youth to discuss the next generation’s ideas and solutions for current and future challenges of sustainability.

Called the Youth Circle session, the event is titled ‘Youth and Sustainability’ and is organised under the directives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Shamma Suhail Faris Al Mazroui, Minister of State for Youth, attended the event along with Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of Dewa, and a number of Dewa’s younger staff.

The Youth Circle was organised at the Reading is Positive Energy exhibition at Zabeel Park. Participants discussed the role of young people in the sustainability of resources. They enriched the discussions by presenting constructive ideas related to the role of young people in achieving the sustainable development of the UAE.

“The UAE is a young country and its leadership depends on the youth in building the future,” Al Mazroui said.

“The Youth Circle is one of the tools adopted by the government to achieve this goal as it focuses on the most important issues for the future. Sustainability is one of the key pillars for the future that are important, especially for us as young people.”

Al Mazroui underscored the youth’s role in bearing the results of the dependence on fossil fuels. But they are also the ones who will be the ones to reap the fruits of sustainability.”

“Sustainability is not the responsibility of the government alone. It is important for each one of us as it affects both individuals and society as a whole,” added Al Mazroui.

Al Mazroui called on the public and private sectors to organise Youth Circles to meet young employees and listen to them and transform their ideas and energy into practical programmes.

Al Tayer thanked Al Mazroui and the Emirates Youth Council for selecting Dewa as the first government organisation in the UAE to host the Youth Circle.

“Thinking collectively and having open dialogues with the team at work create new ideas and bring us closer to success,” Al Tayer said.

“Organising the Youth Circle to discuss young people’s efforts in the sustainability of resources, emphasises our recognition of the important role of the UAE youth in promoting the sustainability of environmental resources. Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders and the cornerstone of the sustainable development.”

Al Tayer said Dewa strives to actively participate in initiatives involving the youth, both in Dewa and in society in general. This supports its efforts to achieve the Dubai Plan 2021 for Dubai to be a city of happy, creative, and empowered people who are loyal to the UAE.

The UAE may soon allow organ transplant

Some 68% of respondents on a UAE national survey said they were willing to donate organs if they were brain-dead

Dr. Farhad Janahi MD(PhD) MBA FRCS (Urol) Assistant Professor and Consultant Urologist Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dubai Healthcare City

Dubai: The UAE might soon allow organ transplantation from the deceased, providing huge relief to patients on organ donation waiting lists in the country, a senior transplant surgeon from UAE disclosed today.

The deceased organ donation programme, which is now available in all other GCC countries except for the UAE, might soon become a reality in this country too, said Dr Farhad Janahi, assistant professor and renowned kidney transplant surgeon at Mohammad Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) at the Dubai Health Care City (DHCC).

Dr Janahi, who is currently on a trip to the US, spoke exclusively to Gulf News.

Dr Janahi, who was the chief researcher for the survey, based his conclusion on the findings of a National Survey on organ transplant that was presented at a special organ transplant forum held at MBRU last month.

Dr Janahi told Gulf News: “At present there are over 2,000 kidney patients on dialysis in the UAE on a waiting list for kidney transplants alone. Deceased organ donation programme is now a reality in all other Gulf Cooperation Council countries and this survey’s findings indicate that the people of UAE are ready for a new law on deceased organ donation.”

The national survey

The UAE-based survey, titled ‘The National Survey on Organ Donation and Transplant’, conducted by MBRU, included 500 respondents comprising expatriates and nationals above 18 years of age. The survey, which was headed by Dr Janahi, was conducted to study public awareness, beliefs and attitudes towards organ donation and to see if people were attuned to this idea. Nearly 68 per cent of the respondents said they were ready to donate in the event they became brain-dead, which shows that the country is ready for deceased organ transplantation.

The results of this survey were presented at the first UAE Organ Donation forum held last week at the DHCC which was held under the patronage of the Chairperson of Dubai Health Care City Authority (DHCCA), Princess Haya Bint Al Hussain, wife of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and was attended by 50 transplant experts, religious leaders and donors, among other attendees, and also highlighted means to expand organ transplantation services in the UAE.

Opening the forum, Dr Raja Eisa Al Gurg, vice-chairperson and executive director of DHCCA, said: “The MBRU was created in line with the vision of the rulers to improve the quality of health-care services and the health status of the population. Transplantation clearly improves quality of life and saves lives. Forums such as this one will help us achieve the objective of MBRU, which is to provide integrated medical education and research that is nationally responsive and globally connected.”

Dr Amer Ahmad Sharif, chief executive officer, Education Sector, DHCCA, said, “Creating a platform such as the first UAE Organ Donation Forum to discuss legislations, exchange ideas will help us reduce the gap between the demand and supply of human organs for transplantation.”

The forum was followed by transplant procurement courses — organised by the Donation and Transplantation Institute in Spain — which were attended by 44 health-care professionals, representing several entities including the Ministry of Health and Prevention, Health Authority — Abu Dhabi, Dubai Health Authority, Dubai Healthcare City and Ministry of Presidential Affairs.

Dr Ali Al Obaidli, chairman of the UAE National Transplant Committee and the forum’s keynote speaker, said, “This forum, which was attended by industry experts from the GCC, provided a much-needed platform to discuss means to unify efforts among the organ transplant programmes in the region. The UAE has the potential to occupy a prominent place in the field of organ transplantation in light of the improved health-care services and a strong organ donation culture in the country.”

On the sidelines of the forum, 30 kidney donors were honoured at an appreciation ceremony.

UAE telco offers smartphones from Dh20/month; iPhone from Dh75/month

As part of a new campaign, a UAE telecom operator is offering brand new smartphones starting from Dh20 per month, with new iPhones for as low as Dh75 per month.

Etisalat says its new Business Devices program offers small and medium businesses (SMBs) a range of latest office devices at zero upfront cost and easy instalment plans.

Under the new program, devices for SMBs are not bundled with any service, thereby facilitating existing customers to buy their device of choice on a standalone basis.

Emirates 24|7 scanned the smartphones and found that the Xiaomi Redmi 2E (16GB) starts at Dh20 per month on a 24-month instalment programme.

Not a Xiaomi fan? The 16GB iPhone SE, on the other hand, will set you back by just Dh75 per month over a 24-month period while the 64GB variant of the iPhone SE will cost Dh95 per month (2-year instalment programme).

For those looking for a slightly bigger iPhone, the EMI for a 2-year instalment plan for the 16GB iPhone 6s will work out to Dh115 while that for the 16GB iPhone 6s Plus will cost you Dh140 per month.

Samsung fans can get the new Galaxy S7 for as low as Dh110 per month while the Edge variant of the Galaxy S7 will set you back by Dh120 per month.

“We are excited to introduce our new Business Devices proposition where we offer a wide range of business grade office equipment at zero upfront and flexible payment options, and other value-added services for SMBs to optimise their performance and improve efficiency,” said John Lincoln, Senior Vice President, SMB at Etisalat.

The UAE telco’s extended range of categories include office equipment, computing devices, communication devices, network and storage devices as well as security devices. These include a laptop, desktop, tablet, smart watch, multi-function printer, projector, server, smart TV, video conferencing systems, surveillance camera, and micro data centres, among others.

Business-grade laptops, for instance, can be had starting at Dh55 per month on a 36-month instalment programme. The HP 250G4, for one, is available at that price (Dh55/month), while the Yoga Tab 3 Pro tablet can be hand for Dh60 per month (again on a 36-month instalment programme).

Etisalat says that the business-grade devices are available to customers on a one-time payment basis or at a flexible monthly payment plan of 12, 18, 24 or 36 months, as per the requirement of the business.

The device offering also includes free delivery across the UAE for all devices and equipment right to the customers’ doorstep and on-site installation for selected business devices. In addition, devices are covered under manufacturer warranty.

Uber driver picks you up in a Bugatti? Only in Dubai

Dubai’s the city of fast cars and speed freaks, so the next time you order an Uber, don’t be surprised if you’re picked up in a flashy Bugatti.

New York-based YouTube star Coby Persin did just that recently, when he took over a friend’s Uber account for the day and picked up customers along Sheikh Zayed Road.

Dubai’s Ubers are usually Lexus limousines or Toyota Previa vans, so you can imagine the customers’ reactions when Persin drove up in a canary yellow and chrome Bugatti Veyron instead.

It was one customer’s first time using an Uber, so not only did he have to take a selfie, he wanted to know if Persin would come back afterwards to pick him up afterwards.

Another customer wanted to know how fast the car could go – and Persin obliged. Her reactions were pretty spectacular.

The video has been viewed two million times since it was uploaded six days ago.

Persin, a 21-year-old who describes himself as a social experimenter and prankster on YouTube, has previously staged events to draw attention to legal child marriage – in Times Square, no less – as well as the plight of the homeless and the dangers of Trick or Treating.

He was reportedly in Dubai at the invitation of Rashid Saif Belhasa, the son of Saif Ahmed Belhasa, one of the UAE’s most successful businessmen.

The car sharing app has provided the perfect set-up for pranks before. In March, a man dressed as Batman picked up customers in a Lamborghini Aventador, while talk show host Jay Leno went undercover in October last year to promote his TV show, Jay Leno’s Garage.

GN Focus reached out to Persin via Twitter, but has yet to receive a response. This story will be updated to reflect any response.

Apple CEO Tim Cook's surprise visit to Dubai store

Shoppers at the Apple store in Mall Of The Emirates, Dubai, were in for a pleasant surprise Saturday when Apple CEO Tim Cook paid a surprise visit to the store.

Cook was in the store for a very short time, interacting with the Apple team and happily posing for selfies with stunned customers.

The Apple Inc chief tweeted about his visit: “A quick visit with customers and our fantastic team at the Apple Store, Mall of the Emirates. Thanks Dubai!”

Tim Cook/Twitter

Word of his visit quickly spread on social media along with the pictures.

This is Cook’s second visit to the UAE, since 2014, when he had met the UAE rulers as well as top officials from telecom giant Etisalat.

Cook was on his way back to the US after his trip to China and India.

He concluded a four-day trip to India that could set the stage for Apple’s expansion plans in one of the world’s fastest growing smartphone markets.

Apple is looking to expand its retail presence in India and is pursuing a license to set up its own stores, which could start to open as early as next year.

The Apple boss has spent several days in the country after jetting in from China, in a visit seen as an extended Asia charm offensive.

He has announced investments including an app design centre in the southern technology hub of Bangalore and a mapping development office in Hyderabad.

Cook met with China’s main Internet and telecommunications regulator this week during his visit to Beijing.

During his trip to China, Cook announced Apple had invested $1 billion in Chinese ride-hailing app Didi Chuxing, rival of US-based Uber.

Apple has been at the centre of a debate on the role technology companies play in protecting data that led to a much-publicised dispute between Apple and the FBI over a phone linked to a shooting in San Bernardino, California.

In April Apple reported its first drop in global iPhone sales since launching the smartphone in 2007.

UAE Resident Alert: Save 33% of your salary on rent; lease 1BR @ Dh33,000

UAE residents can save at least 33 per cent of their salary on rent by living in Northern Emirates, according to a report by Dubizzle, a classified website.

“With the highest price for a one-bedroom apartment rental in Ajman priced at an average of Dh39,000 per annum (pa) and Dh41,000 pa in Sharjah, these prices are non-existent in Dubai and are a significantly lighter blow to the wallet at 33 per cent cheaper than a one-bedroom apartment in International City, Dubai, and 200 per cent cheaper than in prime districts such as Downtown Dubai,” said Ann Boothello, Senior Property Marketing Manager, Dubizzle.

In Sharjah, rental prices for one-bedroom apartments declined by 3.95 per cent in the first quarter 2016 compared to the same period last year.

Lease rates in Al Qasba fell from Dh46,000 pa to Dh40,000 pa, while Al Nahda dipped from Dh40,000 pa to Dh38,000 pa.

Ajman rentals declined by 1.85 per cent despite Al Nakhil area rising by 10 per cent and three per cent for one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, respectively. Rents in Al Hamriya area also rose by 8 per cent for one-bedroom units and a whopping 21 per cent for two-bedroom apartments.

Although rental prices increased by 10 per cent in Al Nakhil, the area is still more of an economical option than others with one-bedroom units priced at Dh33,000 pa, the report said.

“Although our data showed a significant decline in prices in certain districts in Sharjah, and Ajman, the overall decline is mild as these Northern Emirates still remain a viable option for UAE property seekers and offer more economical options for those UAE residents on smaller income brackets,” said Boothello.

In February 2016, Asteco, a property consultancy, said new supply of housing units in Sharjah coupled with a lower inflow of residents from Dubai will put downward rental pressure on lower quality apartment towers.

“Rental demand is expected to be stagnant in Sharjah as a reduction in prices in neighbouring Dubai will lead to a lower than usual inflow of new residents, which may be worsened by reduced government spending and potential job cuts,” it said in its fourth quarter report, as it expected over 1,000 units to be added to the market.

20th ARABAL Event To Be Held In Dubai In 2016

As part of its commitment to help shape the future of the global aluminium sector, Emirates Global Aluminium (“EGA”) will host the 20th Arab International Aluminium Conference (“ARABAL”) at Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai, UAE, from 22 to 24 November 2016. EGA, through its core operating assets Dubai Aluminium (“DUBAL”, also known as Jebel Ali Operations) and Emirates Aluminium (“EMAL”, also known as Al Taweelah Operations), has been involved in ARABAL since its inauguration in 1983; and 2016 marks the sixth time that EGA will host the event.

More than 2,000 local, regional and international delegates, speakers, sponsors and exhibitors and visitors are expected to attend the Middle East’s premium aluminium industry gathering. Combining a strategic conference with an international exhibition, ARABAL is the only event of its kind in the region to unite all the leading primary aluminium manufacturers in the GCC, enabling industry leaders to network, conduct business, discuss global challenges and identify suitable solutions.

Commenting on EGA’s continued role as the host of ARABAL, Abdulla Kalban (MD & CEO) said: “EGA is always proud to host ARABAL, which is widely recognised as one of the leading global gatherings for the aluminium industry. The Middle East region offers immense growth opportunities for the global aluminium industry, especially as the sector already holds the proud position as one of the region’s key non-oil industries. ARABAL is the perfect platform to showcase the Middle East’s position as a regional industry powerhouse.”

Under the theme “Global Challenges – Seeking Solutions”, the two-day ARABAL conference will focus on a number of important topics including the Gulf aluminium industry perspectives; sustainability; operations and technology; scrap and recycling; end-user perspectives; and China’s influence in the market. The exhibition held alongside the conference will showcase 65 of the biggest names in the global aluminium sector, featuring specialists across the spectrum – from upstream, through midstream, to downstream industry.

EGA is the largest primary aluminium producer in the Gulf region and among the top five in the world. With a hot metal production capacity of 2.4 million tonnes per year, EGA’s midstream assets accounted for approximately 4.3 per cent of global production capacity in 2015. EGA also has interests in the upstream bauxite mining and alumina refining sectors.

Expats: Lebanese do well abroad as they are law-abiding

Lebanese expats find it ironic that their country still doesn’t have president while Brazil appoints Lebanese president

Dubai: There’s finally a Lebanese president, but in Brazil not in Lebanon, Lebanese expats have said after Vice-President Michel Temer assumed the role of president in Brazil early this month. As Lebanon marks its second year without a head of state, Lebanese expatriates in the UAE commented on the irony of Brazil having a president of Lebanese descent while Lebanon is still struggling to appoint one.

Due to the ongoing political drift in the country, parliamentarians’ efforts to elect a president has remained on hold.

The expatriates said the appointment of Temer brought both happiness and sadness to the Lebanese people.

Diana John, 30, a teacher, said, “I personally felt proud that Lebanese people are achieving and doing well and are prominent outside their country, but at the same time it upset me that they have to leave our country to be able to achieve something,” she said.

John said that the reason why expats do well outside their country is “because they are abiding by the law and respect each other regardless of religion or political affiliation, whereas when they go back to Lebanon that’s not the case any more”. On whether the political situation back home affects her, she said, “I haven’t lived in Lebanon, so it doesn’t directly affect me that we still don’t have a president, but I also have come to understand that even if we did have one, his power is very minimal.”

Hikmat Abdul Baki, 47, a sales director at a car service company, said Brazil was lucky to have a president with Lebanese roots. “Lebanese people are able to succeed outside and reach the highest positions in society but in their home country they are faced with many obstacles as a result of the political and sectarian differences. Many Lebanese people have not been able to be productive in Lebanon even though they are capable of achieving so much. Outside their country they have all the tools and opportunity to succeed.”

“It doesn’t matter to me when the next president of Lebanon will be appointed because I have been living outside Lebanon for the past 18 years. It’s only the image of Lebanon that changes if we have a president, or else I don’t think he can do much even if we he had one.”

Adham K., 29, an auditor in Abu Dhabi, said, “Everyone was quick to point out the irony of the situation, whether they were Lebanese or not. It’s really embarrassing for us Lebanese expats when people ask us why our country is still without a president. We don’t even find the words to explain it to them and have to respond by saying, it’s a long story.”

Adham also believes the Lebanese community in the UAE is hardly affected by the situation of having no president. “I don’t believe Lebanon’s economy or security would improve if there was a president appointed. Neither will the standard of living improve after his appointment.”

They said Lebanese citizens should stop voting on sectarian lines and elect someone who they think is capable of making a difference.

Money mistakes that UAE rich make, how to avoid them

High net worth investors have revealed the top investment mistakes they made before they sought financial advice in a new international poll.

In the survey carried out by deVere Group, a financial advisory organisations, the number one cited mistake (27 per cent) was a failure to properly diversify portfolios.

The other errors were not having started to invest earlier (23 per cent); focusing on the short-term (20 per cent); being emotional over investments (15 per cent); and not having kept enough cash in reserve (8 per cent). A mere 7 per cent did not know or did not respond.

A sample of 652 deVere clients in the UAE, the UK, Asia, Africa, and the US who have investable assets of more than Dh5 million (or the equivalent) were polled.

DeVere Group CEO and founder, Nigel Green comments: “All serious investors have made previous investment mistakes that could have been easily avoided.

“This could make it sound like investing is somewhat perilous. Yet nothing could be further from the truth – not investing is probably more dangerous over the longer-term. This is evidenced by the fact that most of the world’s wealthiest people are themselves dedicated investors. It is just a question of being sensible, taking proper advice and, where possible, learning lessons from others to avoid the obvious mistakes.”

Of the poll’s results, he says: “Ensuring your portfolio is properly diversified is one of the fundamentals of successful investing. Yet it is surprising how many people fail to do this. Having a well-diversified portfolio across asset classes, sectors and regions means you are best-placed to mitigate risks and best-placed to take advantage of important opportunities.

“All too often even experienced investors focus on the short term heavily and there are many disadvantages to this. Typically, a short-term investment strategy involves considerably higher risks, compared to investing over a longer period.

“Other pitfalls of a short horizon include that investors can often sell a quality investment too early due to over focusing on short-term valuation metrics. Alternatively, they may sell an investment if it drops in the short term, meaning that they would then miss out on it potentially growing steadily in the longer term with increasing returns.”

He continues: “Stock market performance is fairly predictable over the longer-term – they usually go up. For this reason, investing in equities is recognised globally as one of the optimum ways to accumulate wealth over long periods. If you put off investing you are likely to miss out on the long-term benefits you could have been gaining.”

Making decisions based on heartfelt emotions and loyalty are admirable traits in most parts of life – but not when it comes to investing. Investment decisions based on pure emotions, such as fear, greed, or the desire to follow the crowd, amongst others, can be disastrous. Objectivity is key.

Finally, not having kept some powder dry is another common error highlighted by many investors. It is always advisable to have some cash ready and be prepared to use it should a clear trend and/or opportunity present it itself.

The SIKKA Art Fair, Dubai Art Season’s flagship initiative, is held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture).

The last edition of SIKKA Art Fair was inaugurated by Her Highness Sheikha Latifa Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum in the presence of Her Excellency Ohoud Bint Khalfan Al Roumi, Minister of State for Happiness, and Her Excellency Shamma Bint Suhail Faris Al Mazrui, Minister of State for Youth, with a core aim to further raise happiness and positive energy across all communities within Dubai. The much-anticipated 2017 edition of the SIKKA Art Fair follows a hugely successful line-up of events for 2016, which garnered a remarkable turnout for its stimulating music, dance, plays, poetry recitals, improvisational performances and open-air cinema screenings featuring local and international talent.

Designed to encourage the creativity of artists across the region, the 2017 fair will feature arts and culture on the move with new events such as ‘SIKKA around the City,’ ‘SIKKA Art Van’, and ‘Al Fahidi Fridays’ that will focus on highlighting Al Fahidi Historical District as a year-round regular artistic and cultural centre. The SIKKA initiatives reflect the Authority’s commitment to contributing towards establishing Dubai as a city of happy, creative and empowered individuals, by providing an increasingly engaging cultural environment to inspire and raise the positive spirit in Dubai.

Her Highness Sheikha Latifa Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum commented, “One of our key mandates at Dubai Culture is to further engage Dubai’s wider community to think creatively, by supporting talented artists to showcase their skills across different creative disciplines. As we continue to enrich future editions of the SIKKA Art Fair with new projects, we are fulfilling the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Ruler of Dubai, to establish the emirate as a city of happy, creative and empowered people by 2021 by highlighting the cultural framework of the city and its commitment to nurturing established and emerging talent.”

Her Highness Sheikha Latifa added: “We are glad to drive the continued progress of SIKKA Art Fair with a new line-up of activities and events for the upcoming edition. In light of this year’s successful turnout, SIKKA has cemented its position as a prominent platform for emerging artistic talent within the UAE and across the GCC. Part of our mission is to highlight Dubai’s position as a global centre for creativity and innovation by ensuring that the essence of SIKKA Art Fair reaches a larger audience through new initiatives including Al Fahidi Fridays, SIKKA around the City and the SIKKA Art Van.”

In the spirit of artistic innovation and creativity, the fair’s new schedule will focus on highlighting the art and culture activities happening within the Al Fahidi Historical District. Monthly Al Fahidi Fridays, one of the Fair’s latest theme-based events, will delight audiences with special activities, including courtyard animations and performances from local Al Fahidi Historical District community members.

SIKKA around the City will engage different neighbourhoods in Dubai with inspired pop-up art concepts, for which artists and galleries participating in the fair will be invited to contribute their talents to the Art Season.

In addition, the SIKKA Art Van, a modern mobile-art space, will be traveling to different districts and residential areas to present exhibitions and art workshops to discerning audiences across the city.

The programme will also feature 60 workshops with more than 500 participants, in addition to a variety of 55 stage acts such as singing, theatre acts and poetry.

The 2016 edition featured 25 art installations representing different artistic formats and selected from more than 90 initial submissions.

Dubai Culture aims to enrich the cultural scene and draw attention to the city’s rich Arabian heritage through various initiatives. The authority’s focus is to build bridges of constructive dialogue between different civilisations and cultures through constructive initiatives that benefit all citizens and residents.

Egyptian Red Devils shock Roma in a thriller

Waleed Sulaiman of Al Ahli (left) vies with Strootman Kevin and Zukanovic Ervin of AS Roma during the match at the Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain last night.

Abu Dhabi: Egypt’s top club Al Ahly put up a spirited performance to edge Italian giants AS Roma 4-3 win in a thrilling Champions Golden Cup international friendly in Al Ain on Friday. Both teams were locked 2-2 at the breather.

Substitute Mohammad Ahmad scored the matchwinner for Al Ahly late into injury time with the crowd erupting in celebration.

Earlier, John Antwi, Moamen Zakaria and Waleed Sulaiman had scored for Al Ahly.

For Roma, Edin Dzeko, Mohammad Salah and William Vainqueur scored a goal apiece.

The Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium that normally take on a purple hue when the home team Al Ain take the field, turned into a sea of Red. The Egyptian expat population had turned up in full strength to support their No 1 club with Al Ahly boasting a history of over 100 years. The noise was deafening. The Egyptian media also was in full force and most of the journalists too had donned Al Ahly colours.

A few kilometres away, at Al Ain’s Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium, Al Jazira and recently crowned Gulf League Champions Al Ahli were involved in a crucial President’s Cup semi-final match but the crowd turnout there was sparse in comparison.

Another reason for the large fan turnout had to do with the signing of Egyptian star Mohamad Salah by Roma. Salah has been one of Roma’s best performers since joining last summer as the club has been battling for a UEFA Champions League spot next season. With that signing, Roma are among the most popular European clubs in Egypt. They now have more Egyptian Facebook followers than any other European club in the world.

Loudest cheer

Salah got the loudest cheer as he stepped on to the field and the Egyptian national anthem sung in chorus would have given goosebumps to many.

With Roma coach Luciano Spalletti announcing that the friendly was an opportunity for him to scout for new players, Al Ahly players had that extra motivation to give their best against the star-studded side comprising the old warhorse Francesco Totti, Edin Dzeko and Kevin Strootman.

It was the third meeting between the two clubs. In 2002 the two teams met for the first time, with Al Ahly winning 2-1 in Cairo. Six years later they met again in Cairo, and the Giallorossi defeated Al Ahly 3-0.

It took just 13 minutes for John Antwi to provide the Red brigade with the breakthrough seizing on a defensive blunder and it triggered wild celebration in the stands.

That was before Totti made his mark. His pinpoint long ball found the former Man City forward Edin Dzeko, who showed fine ball control before blasting home with an on-the-turn left-footer to get the equaliser in the 19th minute.

Then Salah sunk many an Egyptian heart with a brilliant strike from way outside the box on a back pass from Dzeko in the 40th minute. However, Al Ahly roared back with Moamen Zakriya scoring on a counter attack.

Then 10 minutes into the second half Waleed Sulaiman put Al Ahly back in the lead after stealing the ball from a defender.

Al Ahly didn’t take the foot off the pedal even after that goal but William scored in the 90th minute to again restore parity for Roma. However, just when it looked that the match would end in a draw, Ahmad emerged as the star for Al Ahly with a mesmerising run to make it 4-3.

Ahmad Al Darmaki primed for the heat of battle in Abu Dhabi Warriors 4 after tough training in the desert

UAE’s only pro MMA fighter desperate for revenge over Ukrainian at IPIC Arena next Tuesday

Abu Dhabi: Revenge, as the cliche goes, is a dish best served cold.

But for the UAE’s only professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter, Ahmad Al Darmaki, his own quest for retribution has been fuelled in the blistering heat of the Abu Dhabi desert, where he sprints six days a week for one and a half hours.

The Fujairah-born 27-year-old has subjected himself to this punishing training regime in preparation for next Tuesday’s Abu Dhabi Warriors 4 at the IPIC Arena at Zayed Sports City, which will host 10 bouts involving fighters from all over the world.

He will face Ukraine’s Artiyom Gorodynets, who he feels controversially beat him at the third edition of the UAE capital’s MMA showpiece last October by using an illegal armbar submission.

It was Al Darmaki’s third loss in as many fights since turning professional four years ago and he exudes an unshakeable belief that there will not be a repeat.

“I have good news for the people who are waiting for my rematch,” Al Darmaki, who fights at lightweight and who achieved two victories as a boxer and three in MMA at amateur level, tells Gulf News in an exclusive interview in Media City, Dubai. “I am confident that I am going to make my opponent so exhausted and, Inshallah, by the will of God, let his muscles scream for oxygen.”

His self-assuredness owes much to his innate stamina, which has been enhanced by pounding the unforgiving Abu Dhabi desert, as well as CrossFit and swimming sessions.

Running in such gruelling conditions have held no fear for the grimly determined Al Darmaki, either, as he experienced similar when he was a UAE army officer for six years in the UK and Afghanistan.

He was also naturally proficient at 15-kilometre and 20-kilometre runs and marathons, to the extent that a friend, Diab Bin Ghanim Al Mazrouie, encouraged him to test his endurance in a fighting capacity.

“I’ve been through the hardest things in the army, like camping in the desert,” he explains. “So when you go into the [MMA] ring, you feel mentally tougher and you feel no pressure and are so calm.

“In the desert, we used to do shooting rifles in the night in 45 degrees. Five-hundred shots with a heavy bag, walking 20 kilometres is tough.”

Isn’t he physically sick afterwards?

“Yes. It’s good,” he replies, with masochistic relish.

Expounding on the benefits of his routine Al Darmaki, who wants to be known as ‘The Desert Fighter’ and who took up MMA six years ago, adds: “Because the ring is so hot with the lights and stuff, I was wondering, ‘How can I manage with that stuff? How can I improve my cardio?’.”

Al Darmaki has also focused rigorously on improving his technique with his training partner, and fellow MMA fighter, Anas Siraj Mounir.

“Technically, Ahmad is good, his striking is good,” the Moroccan tells Gulf News. “His pressure on top is really good as well, so there are just a few little details he needed to improve, such as his movement and his ground game, so we have been doing a lot of drilling and sparring and conditioning work.”

One thing Al Darmaki does not have hone is his supreme self-belief.

“I am so confident,” he repeats, several times.

No wonder, then, that his boxing inspiration was Britain’s former featherweight world champion, Prince Naseem Hamed, who won renown for his cocksure, hands-down style and spectacular ring entrances in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Al Darmaki says his ultimate aim is to be a world champion like his hero, but how can he justify such braggadocio without a victory in the professional ranks?

“I feel like I am brave when I enter the ring; I don’t feel nervous, and I feel so calm,” he insists. “These three losses don’t bother me.”

What does Mounir – who trains Al Darmaki at the FitRepublik gym in Dubai – make of his friend’s apparently vaulting ambition?

“It’s very realistic,” he says. “To be honest, anyone can become a world champion if they work hard and he’s doing that. He’s very brave, never nervous, never scared.

“He’s always moving forward, which is a really good quality, as a lot of people shy away [from combat] sometimes.”

Al Darmaki returns several times to the perceived injustice of his second-round stoppage last October, tacitly harnessing it as a powerful driving force for his return to the ring.

“I lost the fight and it wasn’t my fault as he used an elbow against the rules,” he says, the agony of the memory wreathed across his face. “I didn’t expect to lose and this time I am going to knock him out.”

Also spurring him on is the fact that he is jobless after a recent redundancy. As such, he says failure is not an option in his new discipline because he has a wife and six-month-old daughter, Muna, to support.

“I have to win, man,” he says. “It’s kill or be killed.”

As he did last October, Al Darmaki will enter the ring with the UAE flag draped proudly over his shoulders and he is sure to be greeted by a rapturous reception by a partisan home crowd.

“I wanna be a big example to the UAE people and I wanna show them I am very good at MMA,” he says.

Fighting talk, then, but now it is time for Al Darmaki to walk the walk in the heat of the battle as bravely as he has survived the rigours of the desert.

Why UAE expats are taking advantage of weakening rupee

More than 40 per cent of the non-resident Indians (NRIs) living in the UAE prefer to buy property in India as an investment, whether for the first time or as an additional asset.

As per the latest survey conducted by Sumansa Exhibitions, the organiser’s of the biannual Indian Property Show, 43 per cent of the respondents opted to invest in Indian real estate so that they could build profit on it, as compared to 57 per cent who were buying property for personal use.

Out of these 22 per cent were buying it for the first time, while for 21 per cent was an additional investment. The upcoming, IPS, will be held at Dubai World Trade Centre, Zabeel Hall 5 from June 2 to 4, 2016.

Mangalore emerged as the favourite property destination for NRIs in the UAE, finding a place among the top 10 most popular cities. Mumbai and Bangalore continue to retain the top destination slots on the popularity chart.

“An increasing number of Indians are looking to park their wealth in Indian real estate because they foresee lucrative returns on investment,” said Srividya Rajan, General Manager- Corporate Sales & Brand Engagement, Sumansa Exhibitions.

“At a time when the rupee has depreciated against dollar, many investors feel the time is ripe to lock their savings in Indian property, before prices escalate. Moreover, with so many funding options available, buying an additional property for investment has become an easy choice, especially now that certain two- and three-tier Indian cities offer more affordable, yet luxurious, property, which promises to appreciate.”

The report, based on survey of 14,600 NRIs, found that 75 per cent buyers looking to purchase property of up to nearly Dh555,555 (Rs10 million), with apartments being the popular choice. Besides, buyers seeking home finance dipped by 4 per cent to 61 per cent from 65 per cent.

Dubai to host largest gathering of Otolaryngologists in Middle East on 24th May

The 13th Annual Middle East Update in Otolaryngology Conference and Exhibition, ME-OTO, organised by Informa Life Sciences Exhibitions, is set to open its doors from the 24th-26th May at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre alongside the first ever World Congress on Cochlear Implants in Emerging Countries.

With an expanding spectrum of key Ear, Neck and Throat, ENT, topics and industry trends all set to feature on this year’s conference agenda, the events will attract the largest gathering of Otolaryngologists in the Middle East.

The Conference and Exhibition will host more than 70 leading companies in the field of ENT and Otolaryngology, showcasing the latest healthcare technology and innovations from across the world. The three-day conferences will host over 200 speakers addressing more than 2,000 attendees on the latest developments in otology, audiology, rhinology, laryngology, head and neck surgery, skull base surgery, sleep medicine and speech therapy.

The first World Congress on Cochlear Implants in Emerging Countries will focus on the challenges and opportunities for improved access to cochlear implants in a bid to improve the quality of life for those suffering with hearing difficulties and other ENT related issues across the region.

A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that does the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) to provide sound signals to the brain. Each year, an estimated 3,000 cochlear implant procedures are performed in the MENA region. Globally, there are 360 million people with disabling hearing loss, which continues to rise every year. Regionally, there is a high prevalence of hearing disabilities, with an estimated 1 in 25 people in the MENA region affected.

In an effort to combat the high prevalence and prevent undetected hearing problems, which can lead to speech development problems, the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention launched a hearing disorder early screening programme for new born babies in 2014. Babies diagnosed with a hearing disability are then referred to an ENT specialist who advises on the correct treatment such as a cochlear implant.

Speaking on the benefits of advancing technologies for patients with hearing impairments, Dr. Muuaz Tarabichi, ENT surgeon and Conference Co-Chairman said, “The Cochlear Implant is a life changing technology, which requires the existence of an enabling environment, teamwork and a sophisticated healthcare system in place to ensure the best results for patients with hearing impairments,” he said.

“This year’s congress comes in line with the UAE’s efforts to enable a highly advanced healthcare platform through education on advancing treatments and diagnosis tools, allowing for better care of children and adults with hearing impairments,” Dr. Tarabichi said.

Along with the main conference topics, the 2016 conference will have a special focus on the latest in Paediatric Otolaryngology. “Over 50 percent of the ENT patient population are actually children who are more likely to get ear, nose and throat infections than adults. As such, continuous progress on comprehensive and personalized care is required,” Dr. Tarabichi added.

Another special focus will be featured on the latest updates related to the Human Papilloma Virus, HPV, also known as the silent epidemic, which is a leading cause of head and neck cancer cases, accounting for up to 90 percent of the Oropharyngeal cancer cases in some countries. Breakthroughs in robotic surgeries for treating HPV related Oropharyngeal cancer sufferers will be showcased during the three-day event.

Dr. Gregory S. Weinstein, Head and Neck Surgery Director, University of Pennsylvania, said, “While the data is not yet available for the GCC, a recent study of patients in Northern India revealed that approximately 30 percent of Oropharyngeal cancers are HPV related. My hope is that discussions generated at the Annual Middle East Otolaryngology Conference and Exhibition will spur clinical interest and research in the Middle East and surrounding regions.”

Speaking on the importance of the Conference, Simon Page, Managing Director, Informa Life Sciences Exhibitions, said, “We are proud to host the largest meeting of Otolaryngologists in the Middle East that provides the ideal platform for the region’s premier business, networking and knowledge sharing event for the ENT and Audiology world,” he said. “This year’s meeting is expected to be exceptional, especially with the additional track on cochlear implants in efforts to greatly improve access to this technology and mainstream best practices and optimal benchmarks.”

The six conference tracks at ME-OTO are CME accredited by the Cleveland Clinic. In addition, three ME-OTO awards will be presented on May 24th to highly deserving players in the ENT industry in recognition of their contribution and excellence in the field: the “Karl Storz” Award for Excellence in Teaching, the “Ingeborg and Erwin Hochmair” Award for Service to the Deaf, and the “Arab Health” Personal and Professional Achievement Award.

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince hails Everest conquest

16 climbers from the UAE Armed Forces has set up camp in the Khumbu valley, 5,364 metres above sea level in the Himalayas in Nepal, as they prepare to climb Mount Everest.

The UAE military team will camp there for several weeks in preparation for the main adventure, which is attempting to climb the world’s highest peak as the first official military team in the region.

The climbers have previously completed a nine day trek from the village of Lokla, staying overnight in several villages along the trail before reaching the Everest base camp.

Dr. Hashel Obaid Al Tunaiji, one of the team members and the doctor accompanying the mission, said that all the team members are in good health and have gradually adapted to the high altitudes and the decreasing levels of oxygen.

Abu Dhabi: His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, congratulated the UAE Armed Forces team for reaching the summit of Mount Everest.

In a handwritten letter to the team, Shaikh Mohammad expressed his joy at the team’s achievement and their efforts in overcoming extreme challenges.

Shaikh Mohammad hailed the team for being persistent in their adventure and succeeding in reaching the summit through a team effort and by undergoing extensive physical and psychological preparations.

Shaikh Mohammad praised the efforts of women mountaineers in the Armed Forces who successfully completed the challenge and reached the South Base Camp in Khumbu Glacier that lies at an altitude of 5,363 metres above sea level in the Himalayas.

Shaikh Mohammad’s letter was read out to the mountaineers at the South Base Camp through walkie-talkies.

The mountaineers expressed their heartfelt appreciation to Shaikh Mohammad, who closely followed their progress and encouraged them to keep pushing forward in order to complete the climb.

The team arrived at the third camp, which is 7,162 metres above sea level, after crossing camps one and two, which are among the fourth most advanced camps on Everest ranging in height between 6,400 and 7,500 metres.

The team includes 16 climbers, 13 of whom are military personnel of different ranks in the UAE Armed Forces, including a doctor specialising in sports medicine and altitude physiology, along with three experts specialised in mountaineering expeditions.

The team is the biggest military team in the region to conduct such an expedition and one of the first official teams worldwide to climb Everest, which stands at 8,858 metres, after the earthquake which hit the area in 2015.

Confusion looms over fuel delivery service in UAE

Dubai: The answer as to whether a fuel delivery service will soon operate in the UAE is anybody’s guess.

Gulf News has reached out to founders of the app Get Fueled, but as of Thursday, those behind the social media campaign did not reply.

On Wednesday, Abu Dhabi National Oil Distribution Company (ADNOC Distribution), Emirates General Petroleum Corporation (Emarat) and Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) denied the launch of a new fuel delivery service in the UAE.

ADNOC said: “This statement comes after tracking fuel delivery advertisements circulating on websites and social media channels that promise delivery of petroleum outside of service stations to homes or work sites.

Such practices require a comprehensive study into the safety implications for society and the environment, as well as ensuring strict standards and measures are adhered to when fuel is transported and filled from outside the dedicated service stations.”

Bollywood fitness expert to train Dubai

Yasmin Karachiwala, pilates trainer to stars such as Padukone and Kaif, will be part of A-Tone, a new fitness studio that opens May 25

“Please don’t ask me who my favourite celebrity clients are,” Yasmin Karachiwala, fitness trainer to Bollywood stars, laughingly pleaded, as we settled down at the Gulf News office, to talk about A-Tone, her fitness studio, opening in Dubai on May 25.

“What is worse is now the stars have started asking me this question too! And I said, ‘Seriously? You guys are so insecure?’”, laughed Karachiwala.

Yet she concedes, saying, “Preity [Zinta] is one of my favourite clients. I know she talks about me to trainers in Los Angeles — I feel very good when she tells me these stories — but when she comes to Mumbai she’ll call and say ‘Babe, I’m back. When can I come?’”.

The just married 41-year-old Bollywood actress recently posted a picture on Instagram last month with Karachiwala, when she visited Mumbai soon after her wedding, confirming what the trainer said.

A-Tone, which opens in Business Bay, is a collaboration between Karachiwala and Dubai-based fashion designer-turned-fitness enthusiast, Anjali Chandiramani. It was on an airline that the idea to launch A-Tone in Dubai took birth, Karachiwala told tabloid!.

“Anjali and I have been friends for a few years. It was a mutual friend’s and my husband’s birthday and we were to celebrate it in Goa. Four of us — she, me and two other friends — were going to prepare for it. Anjali and I just happened to sit next to each other and started chatting and things kept taking shape. At that time I was just starting out on my first franchise in south Mumbai and I told her whenever you are ready, I’ll come. So she came back [to Dubai] and did the math,” said Karachiwala, who launched her book Sculpt and Shape: The Pilates Way (with co-author Zeena Dhalla) in Mumbai on April 20, with Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt.

“And that’s it,” said Chandiramani. “I did a bit of research on her and when I threw out a couple of teasers to people I know to learn what they thought of her, I received tremendous response. And we just had to do it”.

Karachiwala has been in the fitness industry for 25 years, but she became a pilates trainer about 10 years ago after training at Balanced Body in California, US. Today her client list not just includes Kaif and Bhatt but several A-list actresses such as Deepika Padukone who recently spoke about her training with Karachiwala for her Hollywood debut XXX.

Ahead of the studio opening, Karachiwala spoke of pressures of working in Bollywood, how to be fit and her passion — pilates.

You’ve been in the fitness industry for so long. Would you say pilates is better than other forms of exercise?

I never say pilates is better than other exercises. Every exercise system has its own science and if followed correctly, then every exercise system is great. My first question to my clients is what they enjoy doing. If you enjoy running and I put you in a pilates class, you may just end up hating it.

Having said that, I haven’t quite met anyone who doesn’t really enjoy pilates. 10 years ago I was looking for something that was revolutionary for the abdominals because everyone manages to have everything else working but when it came to abs, they struggle. We try five hundred sit-ups and reverse crunches and [all sorts of] abdominal exercises — I even reached a thousand and it didn’t help. It was then during my research, I found a studio in California which was highly spoken of. I emailed them that I wanted to be an instructor. That’s how my journey began.

I wanted to do only mat pilates because the equipment is very expensive and the cost of bringing it to India would have been twice as much. Once I started, I loved it and watched others use the equipment. That’s when I went up to the instructor and said I wanted it all. I’d been in the fitness industry for 15 years but pilates was completely different from what I had experienced before, and I’ve done everything from crossfit to functional training to yoga. It seemed to merge everything.

So I returned with one reformer and one wunda chair because they were the cheapest. But how much ever I spoke to people about pilates, I couldn’t explain correctly. I started trial classes and let them experience it themselves. And of course, once you have the celebrities doing it and enjoying it, everyone wants to try it. It’s not something that will fade away. Also in the kind of dances the actresses do, some parts of the body are more exercised than others and cause an imbalance. And pilates balances you.

Who can do it?

You, me, a 10-year-old, a 100-year-old — everyone from the age of 10-100.

Then, who can’t do it?

A newborn baby maybe? [laughs]

But to answer your question, pilates is great for sportspersons who are in rehab after an injury, if you are an obese person or a skinny one, if you are a super fit person or a completely unfit one. When we train to be instructors, our training is very intense. We don’t just exercise, we have a 100 hours of observation and self training, assistant teacher’s training… before we actually touch bodies and train them. This teaches us how do deal with each person and the one thing we try to accomplish after every class is to make the client feel they have done a great workout when they walk out. They should be able to feel like they can do anything.

Celebrities, especially Bollywood actors, have erratic work schedules. How do you deal with that?

That’s a difficult task. But these actors and actresses are very committed and conscious of what they wish to look like and how they want to project themselves. This makes my job easy because they know what they want, which they put [across] to me and we figure out a work process. For example if you see Alia in her new movie Udta Punjab, she had to be really skinny and look anorexic. So we had to work on losing a lot of weight. We worked a lot on weight training and just did pilates to keep her core strong. If you see Katrina in Dhoom 3, she’s muscular but at the same time she didn’t want to look like the next Ms Arnold Schwarzenegger. Whatever we do to pump up the muscles in the gym, I wean them off with pilates. Deepika [Padukone] was working on XXX and had to be very fit and active, and do stunts. So before she left, for a month we really trained on plyometrics, gym and combined all that with pilates. Whatever you misalign in the gym or any other field in life, pilates balances it.

Schedule-wise, yes it’s erratic but I have a mantra that if they are committed enough to come at midnight — after full 12 hours of shooting — to train, there’s no excuse for me.

Which of them have been toughest and easiest to deal with?

They are all tough because they all have expectations about how they look. Plus, they have time frames that they work in. When Katrina was doing Chikni Chameli she told me “Even if one thing jiggles, you are dead” — and she really moved in that song. So that’s a lot of stress for me. But lucky for them I don’t take stress so easily.

Also they are tough on themselves. So I can’t complain that they are tough on me because it’s just part of their process. When they look good on screen and get appreciated, I feel very good as well, so it’s all worth it.

At the same time, they are all easy too. Because I train so many of them, sometimes I can’t give them the time they want because someone else has already booked it, and they don’t throw tantrums. None of them have an attitude with me, they adjust as far as they can. Luckily, there’s no animosity or competition between them. All the actors I train are very secure so that truly helps.

Plus they adjust to my travelling. I’m constantly updating my schedule between training them and trainers — I’m a master trainer. Last year I travelled a lot. So Katrina called my husband and said ‘I don’t think your wife is going for training. I think she’s having an affair’.

And how about the non-celebrities that you train?

All the time! (laughs) That’s the challenge right? How do you convince them?

MANTRA TO GET FIT

Yasmin Karachiwala and Anjali Chandiramani give us tips to keep fit.

Don’t compare, just improve yourself

“I think people tend to compare themselves to someone else more than try to improve themselves. So it’s always like [I want] Katrina’s abs and Alia has lost a lot of weight so how does she do it? Instead of wanting to look like someone else, why don’t you be a better version of you? Be fit which you deserve,” said Chandiramani.

Sleep is very important

“You can work out as much as you like but if you don’t rest or sleep, it’s not going to do the good it’s meant to do to your body,” said Chandiramani.

Diets don’t last

“One of the funniest things people ask for is a diet and I always ask them, ‘What’s your age?’, and they’d say 20, 30, 40… And I ask, ‘You don’t know how to eat for your body? Seriously?’,” said Karachiwala. “And my next question is ‘Are you smart?’ And we all know the answer to that! So why can’t you be smart about choices in life? You know good food and you know bad food. If you are going to eat sugar and say ‘it does nothing for me’ wake up and smell the coffee. You know if you eat carbs after a certain time it is not going to be digested easily because you are going to sleep right after that. I just make them realise which foods are good and bad, which foods work for them by trying them out and then make their own food plan because that’s what will help them sustain for a longer time”.

Drink water

You can’t possibly ‘forget’ to drink water!

Move!

“Movement is very important. I met someone recently who said she didn’t move at all,” said Karachiwala. “We are animals, we can’t not move — we are meant to find food, hunt. Earlier people walked from one place to another. Now you step into an air-conditioned car the moment you step out of the house. I tell all the corporate people who are my clients who complain they don’t get time to walk around. But you may have conference calls, there are hands free headsets, then walk in the office, don’t sit in a chair. A ‘mobile phone’ is called that for a reason. It makes a big difference”.

Strength train

Another important thing is strength training, says Karachiwala. As you grow older you lose bone density and muscle mass.

“So after a certain age, it’s very important to strength train, and I don’t mean like Sylvester Stallone pick up weights. Use your own body weight. You can do squats, tricep dips, walk push ups, knee push ups — so many things”.

Keep a positive attitude

“If you have a positive attitude you can conquer anything. It just comes. I think it like ‘Oh my God, it’s just another day, what can I accomplish today?’ and I feel it’s the work outs that get your spirits high and make you feel good about yourself,” said Karachiwala. “You need to do it for your own self and nobody else. You also need to realise how important fitness itself. Along with looking good, you need to feel good. I try to make people realise how good [exercise] is making them feel and as a result they are looking good”.

Maintain a balance

“Don’t exercise to imbalance your body. We need to modify the exercise sometimes. Like I know that doing more than 10 burpees can cause an imbalance. But people take [exercise] to such levels, that they have a throw up wall. It’s an achievement. For me it doesn’t work as I want people to feel great after a workout. But there are people who do feel great after throwing up. It depends on what you are looking for at that point in time” said Karachiwala.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A-TONE?

Along with Yasmin Karachiwala’s pilates, the centre will also offer sessions for yoga, including aerial yoga, Bodhi suspension training, and all equipment from the Wunda chair to Motr.

Anjali Chandiramani has adapted a new training session she calls Crosscuit — a combination of CrossFit and circuit training.

“I’ve been doing CrossFit for a while and as much as I really enjoy it, it has a lot of negative publicity going on about it as they try to make people do similar kind of exercises at different levels. I can never forget my first CrossFit class where the trainer said do 80 burpees,” said Chandiramani. “It’s a beginner’s class. I was the last person to finish it but they all waited for me to finish. Can you imagine the pressure? It was insane. Even though I can now say I can achieve them pretty easily but I don’t want people to come to my studio and feel intimidated. So we came up with Crosscuit which is a circuit-based training and is time-based, whereby we say 10 minutes of burpees where we do the repeats according to our levels. So it’s CrossFit equipment — we have the ropes, kettle bells, barbells — but put a twist to it so that everybody can adjust to it at their level”.

Dubai's Limitless to make early loan payment of Dh2bn to creditors

Dubai-based real estate developer Limitless announced today that it will make an early payment of Dh2.07 billion to banks and trade creditors this month, following the successful conclusion of its restructuring agreement with lenders.

Under the agreement, Limitless is required to pay its outstanding Dh4.45 billion in bank debt in three instalments in December 2016, 2017 and 2018. However, the company will pay Dh2.07 billion – covering the first instalment and 80 per cent of the second – immediately.

A payment of Dh1.9 billion will be made to banks, covering 43 per cent of the outstanding loan amount, and a payment of Dh163 million to trade creditors, representing around 28 per cent of the amount owed to them.

Limitless Chairman Ali Rashid Lootah said: “We are delighted to have reached 100 per cent lender agreement on our financial restructuring, and proud to be able to outperform the plan with a significant payment that will cover the first instalment seven months ahead of time, and 80 per cent of the second instalment more than 18 months early.

“We thank the Government of Dubai, our lenders and trade creditors for the trust, patience and support that they have shown as we worked together in reaching this historical milestone, which paves the way for Limitless to continue to develop its assets and meet its commitments to investors.”

Expo 2020 Dubai, Wamda host entrepreneurship summit

Expo 2020 Dubai joined forces with Wamda to host a summit bringing together businesses of all sizes to identify opportunities for collaboration and growth.

The Collaborative Entrepreneurship Summit saw presence of more than 400 representatives from multinationals, corporations and startups.

The aim of the Summit was to explore the potential of Collaborative Entrepreneurship (CE) – an idea that seeks to nurture greater synergies between established corporations and startups to create meaningful partnerships that unleash value and enable growth; making a positive impact on the regional economy that lasts beyond 2020.

Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, Director General of Bureau Expo Dubai 2020, said: “Today, we aim to create dozens of new networking opportunities between corporate executives and startups, and to gain a clear understanding of how Collaborative Entrepreneurship can help scale-up smaller businesses and re-energise and ‘re-innovate’ larger ones. By bringing the concept of Collaborative Entrepreneurship to the region, we are clearly demonstrating just how powerful Expo 2020 Dubai can be in convening diverse audiences to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.”

Research lead by Expo 2020 Dubai and Wamda illustrates how Collaborative Entrepreneurship can play a critical role in addressing Mena’s economic and employment needs.

The report, based on interviews with over 120 executives and experts, and a survey of over 700 entrepreneurs in the region, found that collaboration between corporations and startups provides mutual benefits including innovation capability and cultural change for corporations, and scaling potential and market credibility for startups.

The report is available on a dedicated website, Coentrepreneurship.com, launched by Expo 2020 Dubai and Wamda to share insights and experiences with those who want to learn more about Collaborative Entrepreneurship.

Attendees at the Summit heard from international and regional business leaders about successful collaborations between startups and large corporates. Business leaders were equipped with practical tools to adapt Collaborative Entrepreneurship into their business strategies through workshops, hands-on training sessions and presentations.

Marjan Faraidooni, Vice President of Legacy at Expo 2020 Dubai, commenting on the Summit, said: “The Mena region is home to an entrepreneurship movement that is paving the way for diverse, oil-independent economic development; making it an important driver for job creation and youth empowerment. This Summit is a chance to initiate collaboration and spark mutually beneficial relationships. By serving as a platform to nurture meaningful collaborations between people and organisations, Expo aims to generate new opportunities that will create a legacy that lasts well beyond 2020.”

Whilst corporations can help startups to scale and spread their services and technologies, startups can, in return, help their corporate partners adapt to new business models and opportunities. Collaborative Entrepreneurship seeks to provide an opportunity for these organisations to work together and understand how they can benefit from each other’s expertise.

Commenting on the vital role that startups play in spurring economic diversification and growth, Habib Haddad, Wamda’s Cofounder and Chief Executive Officer, said: “Startups are leaders in innovation and are taking on some of the region’s greatest challenges. Many large corporations are only beginning to grapple with the rising influence of these agile businesses. Startups can leverage the resources of large companies to scale rapidly, and large companies can tap the innovative potential and flexibility of startups to obtain access to new markets and technologies, as well as skills.”

“The Collaborative Entrepreneurship initiative is a natural continuation of Wamda’s work as the leading entrepreneurship platform in Mena. It also comes at the right time as startups from the region are flourishing and attracting serious international and regional investments. The initiative offers the private sector a direct channel to engage with startups while offering them opportunities to scale.”

The Summit complements Expo 2020 Dubai’s ongoing BusinessConnect programme, a platform to engage the business community in dialogue, and the sharing of expertise as Dubai prepares to host the landmark mega-event. Since the inaugural BusinessConnect last September, Expo 2020 Dubai has hosted a wide-ranging series of workshops that have covered topics relevant to the regional business community, including sessions last month on major event operations.

UK upgrades e-visa waiver scheme for UAE citizens

Dubai: Travellers from the UAE who faced problems with the UK electronic visa waiver scheme and were delayed from entering Britain when they didn’t enter exact personal details will have a far easier way to fly starting next week.

To make UK travel easier from the UAE, an upgraded electronic visa waiver system will go live on Monday in which travellers will “upload a copy of their passport biographic data so that details can be checked for accuracy prior to travel,” said a statement issued by the UK Embassy in UAE on Thursday.

Electronic visa waivers are good for only one trip into the UK and an e-visa waiver application must be made before every single journey.

Streamlining the system to proof applications for errors should end instances since the introduction of the waiver system in 2014 when some travellers complained they were denied entry on to aircraft because the names and details on their passports did not match their e-applications.

“In early 2014, the UK introduced the EVW scheme, allowing passport holders from the UAE to travel to the UK for a visit of up to six months without having first to obtain a visa,” said an official in the statement. “Unlike the first version of EVW, which relied on passengers entering their personal information exactly as it appears on their passport, the new EVW form asks passengers to upload a copy of their passport biographic data page so that details can be checked for accuracy prior to travel. This means that input errors can be picked up, significantly reducing the risk of issues when boarding or entering the UK.”

The revised e-system also features questions in both English and Arabic making it easier for users in the UAE.

An estimated 50,000 Emiratis visit the UK every year.

A new £15 fee is being added to cover the cost of the upgraded system.

Immigration Minister James Brokenshire said that, “Since the introduction of the scheme in 2014, tens of thousands of travellers from the United Arab Emirates have benefited from using an electronic visa waiver to come to the UK, which reflects the growing importance of our relationship with the region. We know that visitor numbers from UAE are continuing to rise, and we look forward to welcoming more travellers to the UK for business and tourism.”
