Looking for free financial planning advice? This UAE website offers help

National Bonds, the sharia-compliant savings and investment company in the UAE, now provides financial planning tips and tools via its website as part of its continued efforts to spread financial literacy among the UAE population and the wider region.

Launched by the Financial Advisory unit at National Bonds, the new financial planning section of the portal www.nationalbonds.ae offers insights and information in Arabic and English to help the company’s customers achieve their financial objectives.

The topics cover planning for retirement and children’s education, debt management, investment solutions, takaful, and estate planning. In addition, the website offers practical financial planning tips on goal setting, cash management and budgeting, financial health, and the rule of 72 – which provides an almost exact indication of how investments may grow depending on the annual profit rate or return on investment.

The portal also includes handy online calculators for accurately computing expenses, commitments, and budgets for customers to assess how best to save for a secure retirement or consolidate their debts, as well as fine-tune their educational savings strategy.

One of the calculators can even help determine when a savings plan will turn a regular saver into a millionaire. The website dedicates a full page to the latest publications, books and global research in the field of savings and investment.

Speaking on the new services, Mohammed Qasim Al-Ali, CEO of National Bonds, said: “Financial planning is the only way for individuals, corporations, and even governments to achieve financial security. Since the launch of our company, we have worked relentlessly to enhance financial literacy among citizens and residents of the UAE. The 2015 National Bonds Savings Index has revealed that 48 per cent of savers who participated in the survey let information they read on websites influence their savings and investment decisions, while only 11% said they relied on TV, and 12 per cent resorted to magazines and economic newspapers. As for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries, the Savings Index has indicated that as many as 77 per cent of the participants consider the internet to be a reliable source of financial knowledge.

Al-Ali added: “In one way or another, individual practices reflect on society, and small budgets are just as important as large ones. In order to become real partners in social and economic development, members of the public – and particularly the young generation – need to hone their financial planning skills. If we want the youth to contribute their fair share, we have to motivate them to become responsible, and learn sound financial planning and budgeting so that they are ready to assume bigger responsibilities related to investment and wealth management at a later stage. Therefore, we have taken it upon ourselves to offer with appropriate knowledge tools that will help them control their expenses, manage debts, and find the best ways to save and invest.”

According to the S&P Ratings Services Global Financial Literacy Survey 2015, the UAE surpassed other countries in financial knowledge. The results further revealed that Emiratis with lower levels of education and income were more financially astute than their counterparts in most emerging economies. Alarmingly, the survey also indicated that two-thirds of adults across the world lack financial literacy.

UAE bolsters nuclear energy safety

American nuclear experts train federal UAE staff on prevention of illicit nuclear equipment imports and exports

Dubai: Nuclear energy experts from the United States are helping the UAE bolster existing border protection measures against illicit shipments of nuclear equipment or materials related to weapons of mass destruction, said federal officials on Sunday.

The United States Department of Energy’s International and Export Control programme experts met over three days with more than a dozen staff members of the UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).

The American export control programme is designed to “strengthen global efforts to prevent any unlicensed transfer of materials, equipment, and technology related to weapons of mass destruction (WMD), including nuclear weapons”, said the UAE regulator.

Christer Viktorsson, director-general of FANR, told Gulf News on Sunday that training staff who review material transfers will enforce strict international agreements that call for only peaceful nuclear equipment and materials to be transferred across borders.

“As a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the UAE is committed to conducting only peaceful nuclear activities within its borders and also to working with the international community to prevent the illicit transfer of nuclear-weapon-usable materials and technologies,” Viktorsson said in an interview on Sunday.

“Our recent workshop with the US Department of Energy assisted FANR staff members who review all trade applications to transfer nuclear-related items to, from, or through the UAE.”

Viktorsson noted that effective “trade controls are essential tools in international efforts to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons, FANR is fully committed to its leading role in the UAE to support these non-proliferation strategies”.

The workshop is part and parcel of new safety regulations imposed by FANR on the Western Region’s Barakah nuclear power plant where the first of four reactor units are expected to go online next year.

All four nuclear reactors are set for completion by 2020 to provide up to a quarter of the country’s electricity demands yearly.

Federal powers of FANR staff as laid out under FANR’s Regulation 9 were reviewed as part of the training for a better understanding of “national export control licensing, industry compliance, and inspections-based enforcement practices designed to prevent the uncontrolled transfer of sensitive items that could be used to build WMD”, said the federal authority.

The UAE has pledged to use nuclear energy, equipment and technology “exclusively for peaceful purposes only and to implement import and export control rules for nuclear and nuclear-related equipment and technology in strict accordance with Nuclear Supplier Group (NSG) Guidelines for Nuclear Transfers. The NSG is a group of nuclear supplier countries that seeks to contribute to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons through the implementation of two sets of guidelines for nuclear exports and nuclear-related exports”, the authority said.

Ensuring inspections

According to FANR’s Regulation 9 governing import and export of nuclear-related materials, UAE inspectors have full powers to inspect any shipment or premises involved in items related to nuclear power in the country.

The law reads that licensees “shall allow access, without any delay, to the authority to conduct an inspection, which the authority deems to be related to the transfer of regulated items, to verify the correctness and the completeness of the information provided and in compliance with the requirements of the law, this regulation and with conditions of the relevant licences”.

The law also makes its clear that “the authority’s inspectors are authorised to inspect industrial sites, stores or any other sites or locations in the state where regulated items are declared to be located, including, but not limited to, special and free zones in order to … ensure that such items are used for peaceful purposes in accordance with the obligations of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons”.

The regulations will help inspectors “investigate any suspicion that the transfer or end use of regulated items is unlicensed or unauthorised”.

Here's how UAE residents can furnish their house for under Dh6,000

UAE’s classifieds platform dubizzle today said residents can make substantial savings on essentials for the home by opting for second-hand – or pre-loved – goods instead of brand-new items.

By calculating the average costs of home essentials listed on dubizzle over the past year, the platform revealed that furnishing a studio flat and a baby’s room through dubizzle would save residents up to 40 and 42 per cent, respectively, compared to purchasing similar brand-new items from well-known furniture stores.

The average price of items bought on dubizzle over the past year is Dh5,930, while the original price of similar items equates to roughly Dh10,000, it said.

“dubizzle prides itself for being the companion of the person from the moment they step foot in the UAE until they leave,” commented Razan Al Masri, Items for Sale Product Marketing Manager, dubizzle.

As an example, the classifieds site said that the average cost of a brand-new two-seater couch is Dh1,000; however, the average price of a similar item sold on dubizzle’s Items for Sale section is Dh500, highlighting a 50 per cent saving.

Similarly, it noted that the cost of a dining table set with two chairs averages at Dh600 brand-new while the dubizzle average price is one-third cheaper, at Dh200.

Top searched terms and brands

When taking a look at the top searched words in relation to furniture, ‘Ikea’ ranks first, with an average of 7,475 searches per month, followed by ‘Sofa Bed’ and “Leather Furniture” at 6,231 and 4,843 average monthly searches respectively. The top searched appliances are fridges, washing machines and microwaves respectively.

Similar price trends are observed for baby items, an average of 8,376 new baby items has been listed on dubizzle every month, with a daily average of 279 listings. The average price for a pre-loved baby-walker is Dh130, as opposed to Dh300 when a new item is bought. Baby cribs average at Dh370 on dubizzle, therefore resulting in a 38 per cent saving over purchasing a brand-new equivalent, averaging at Dh600.

In relation to entertainment items for the home, the top TV brands searched were identified as “Samsung”, followed by “LG” and “Sony” respectively. The average price of a brand-new flat-screen, 40-inch TV is Dh1,200, while a TV with the same specifications is available for Dh700 on dubizzle, saving users 42 per cent on the original cost.

Purchasing a pre-loved PlayStation 4 from dubizzle can save users up to 22 per cent, with the average price identified as Dh1,250, compared to the brand-new price of Dh1,600.

“In addition to products, dubizzle also has extensive listings for services, from movers to painters, as well as property, jobs and motors to support residents with their relocation needs, reinforcing our position as a one-stop platform for anyone moving to, from or within the UAE,” added Masri.

Now at No. 2: Dubai climbs up ‘liveable cities’ rankings

Dubai: Dubai has topped cities in the Middle East and climbed a notch higher at No. 2 among the world’s cities with “most-improved liveability”.

In 2015, it was ranked No. 3 under the same category.

Dubai’s ranking as the second most-improved city in Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Ranking in 2016 saw its rise in the rankings over the last five years.

The report, published late on Thursday, came from an assessment of the best and worst living conditions across the world, an annual survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit called “Global Liveability Report”.

Dubai followed Tehran — and was ahead of Harare in Zimbabwe — as the city with the most-improved liveability.

Melbourne kept the top spot as the world’s “most liveable city”, followed by Vienna and Vancouver and Toronto.

Jon Copestake, the report’s editor, said: “Dubai and other Emirates have been seen as something of a safe haven for businesses and expatriates given the wider disruption in the Middle East, especially with oil prices affecting economies of other Gulf States like Saudi Arabia.”

Some 140 cities were rated based on comfort for over 30 qualitative and quantitative factors – each rated as acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable or intolerable.

The report noted certain cities — Zurich, Geneva, Frankfurt, Berlin, Oslo, Luxembourg, Brussels, Paris, Rome and Lisbon —seeing declines in liveability, “mostly stemming from heightened fears of terrorism in the wake of attacks in Paris and Brussels.”

Baby girl's premature birth diverts Dubai-Manila flight to India

2 nurses on board help first-time mum deliver premature baby, but could this baby indeed travel for free — for life?

Dubai: A Dubai-to-Manila flight was forced to land in India on Sunday after a passenger delivered a baby girl in mid-air.

According to a social media post already shared more than 3,600 times, the first-time mother suddenly had contractions midway through the flight on board a Cebu Pacific aircraft from the UAE to the Philippine capital.

The flight diversion caused the normally eight-hour flight to last about 18 hours, according to a Facebook post of Missy Berberabe Umandal, of San Lorenzo, Makati, who was on the home-bound flight after a short leisure trip to Dubai.

As the aircraft was cruising at over 30,000 feet, the incident caused a small commotion, prompting the cabin crew to call for help.

The baby girl, due in October according to Umandal, was ushered by two nurses on board who rose to the occasion following medical emergency appeal from the crew.

It was not immediately clear what the name of the baby would be.

Umandal claims she overheard the mother saying that she would name her first-born “Haven,” but a comment on Umandal’s post suggested another name for the baby: “Cebuana Pacifica.”

It’s been claimed a baby born mid-flight could fly with the airline for a lifetime, but Cebu Pacific could not be immediately reached for comment as of posting time.

International aviation rules allow a pregnant passenger to board the plane within 24-32 weeks of pregnancy, but the airline may require a doctor’s certificate stating the condition of the mother and the baby, as well as the husband’s written consent.

Certain airlines require these if the mother is already into her 29^th week of gestation.

3.30 pm: Meeting at Oasis center car park

3.45 pm: Leave Dubai and drive off to the desert

5.00 pm: Reach the edge of the desert and transfer to the camp

5:30 @ Camp. Detoxifying welcome drink and refreshments

6.00 – 07:30 pm: Yoga & Pranayama session (06:50 sunset on

5th May)

7.00 pm: Green tea, Detox tea, Coffee, Refreshments

7.30 – 08:30 pm Meditation

9.00 pm: Dinner, Campfire and overnight stay in the tent

On 5th May April we are hosting Mahony & Azteca (warm up by Melu)

Mahony

Starting with small gigs, Mahony ended up being the resident DJ at Kudos Beach in the Summers, a very representative place for the Romanian electronic scene at that time. He soon started producing his own music, “Literalmente EP” was released at Fumakilla Records, “Oh boy Oh Boy” EP released at District Raw, and “De departe” at Fear of Flying. In 2010 his life changed when he got to start his residency for Romania’s best electronic music club, Kristal Glam Club. Since he got this job, Mahony played alongside Lee Burridge, Dubfire, Audiofly, John Digweed, Carl Cox, dOP, James Zabiela, Pan-Pot, and many other valued artists worldwide. With the Sunwaves festival and his residency at Kristal, Mahony started to play throughout Europe, in Paris, Berlin, Barcelona.

Azteca

It all started in 2004. AZteCA was just sixteen years old, when he had his first contact with House Music at a Romanian beach party. It was an indescribable feeling for the young Transylvanian kid, who was at that time mostly known as an athlete, participating in alpine ski races in Romania, and in other European countries (these days he is a ski instructor) .

As he says of that moment, “ I just felt the music.” Of course this wasn’t a coincidence, because he had already been collecting dance music classics since the age of 14.

This dance music feeling evolved into a much more intense love for House Music (especially Deep House and Tech House). “I love it when people smile when I ‘m playing” says AZteCA , and he found that the most suitable style for creating this feeling, house.
