Review: Fatboy Slim enthralls Dubai’s partygoers at DXBeach

English DJ and pioneer of electronic dance music shows how to remain relevant in 2016 with energetic performance

Partygoers were spoilt for choice at Friday’s DXBeach, a 15-hour mini-music festival held at Zero Gravity in Dubai. The event, which lasted from noon to 3am, was headlined by DJ Fatboy Slim, with performances by DJ Benny Benassi and producer MK.

Whether it was lounging poolside, relaxing on the grass, grooving to hip hop with resident DJs at the indoor club, sitting on plush seats in the lofty VIP section, or getting down and sandy on the beach by the main stage, there was something for everyone.

The event’s concept was to have an all-day party, and Dubai’s revellers were more than happy to oblige. However, most of the crowd started pouring in after sunset. The opening act, featuring Chris Wright, played a mix of funk and disco to get people warmed up, but it was Benny Benassi’s brand of brash electronic dance music (EDM) that brought most audiences to the sandy dance floor.

By the time Fatboy Slim came onto the stage, the sand pit was packed and ready to go. Hailing from Brighton, England, Fatboy Slim, whose real name is Norman Cook, is one of the pioneers of EDM. Throughout the years, he has managed to stay relevant by mixing his classics from the 1990s and early 2000s with the sound of modern-day EDM. And that’s exactly what he did at DXBeach — playing his most recognisable tunes, opening with Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat and Renegade Master, spliced with modern sounds from 2016. Throughout the night, Fatboy Slim played diverse sounds, from a remix of Dr. Dre and Tupac’s California Love to Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, all with an electronic slant that kept the ‘ravers’ on their feet.

During sets, a DJ will often have a microphone to communicate with the crowd. Fatboy Slim, however, did all his talking through his music. He was singing lyrics to the crowd, pointing at audience members in the front row, and even blasting out two air horns. Unlike Benny Benassi’s cool and calm demeanour, Fatboy Slim was kinetic and clearly having a good time, even throwing out some dance moves. Of course, the night would not have been complete without Praise You, Fatboy Slim’s massive hit from 1998.

Afterwards, producer MK’s predominantly piano-led deep house music provided a more soulful, rhythmic contrast to Fatboy Slim’s more frenetic and jumpy set.

RTA displays a smart system to pay bus fare

The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai presently works on developing a Proof Of Concept (POC) initiative that enables the public to pay for their public bus trips through a fully automated smart fare collection system without punching in and out any cards including Nol.

RTA uncovered this initiative on the sideline of its participation in the 36th GITEX Technology Week that takes place on 16-20 October 2016 the Dubai World Trade Center (DWTC) along with other smart initiatives.

“This prospective smart ticketing concept is Be-in/Be-out or you may briefly call it (BIBO) is still at its fledgling stages at RTA. We consider the GITEX platform as a great opportunity to get our public acquainted with the latest and sophisticated technologies the RTA always seeks to harness to make them fully satisfied and Happy,” according to Adel Shakri, Director of Transportation Systems at RTA’s Public Transport Agency.

“When fully rolled out, the public bus commuters in Dubai would enjoy using BIBO system by simply carrying smart cards or smart phones, the fare collection system would check them in and out via a completely hands free enjoyable fare payment,” said Shakri.

“Once the commuters hop in the bus with smart cards/ smart phones in the their pockets, the onboard smart fare collection system immediately registers the time of riding and the location of the bus, and processes automatically the fare payment required. No user interaction, as simple as that,” he explained.

“The BIBO concept represents the latest innovation in fare collection system of the public transport. The passengers who possess a smart card/smart phone just need to walk in and out of the bus and the system fare would deduct the fare automatically based on the trip. There is no need to physically punch the Nol card at the time of boarding and alighting the bus. This concept would certainly boost and promote the Smart Dubai concept that seeks to explore, evaluate and implement the latest technologies and concepts in the public transport,” concluded Shakri.

Dubai Chess Club and Dubai National School establish groundbreaking Chess Academy

Yahya Mohammed Saleh, Planning and Development Manager of Dubai Chess and Culture Club, and Malik Daradkeh, Director of Dubai National School, sign the agreement to bring chess to the school.

Dubai: Dubai Chess and Culture Club has signed an agreement with Dubai National School to establish a first-of-its-kind Chess Academy that will deliver quality chess instruction to schoolchildren.

The agreement was signed by Yahya Mohammed Saleh, Planning and Development Manager of the club, and Malik Daradkeh, Director of Dubai National School.

Under the agreement, the club will create the foundational courses that will be used by the Chess Academy, which will initially cater to male and female primary school students, from first to third grade.

Saleh said the agreement is part of the club’s strategy of promoting chess among all segments of society.

“The schools represent a fertile ground in our continuing search of new talents in chess and grooming future champions,” said Saleh.

“Chess also compliments the academic development of the students as the skills they learn from chess and the impact of the sport on spatial understanding and analytical abilities are very useful in subjects such as science and mathematics.”

Saleh said a number of Dubai Chess Club’s champions were graduates of Dubai National School, most notably reigning back-to-back UAE national champion Fide Master (FM) Saeed Ishaq and his brother, Ahmed Ishaq, who won the title in 2007.

Daradkeh underlined the importance of introducing chess in schools as it enhances the students’ intelligence and helps improve their concentration and strategic thinking abilities.

The sport also stimulates the competitiveness of the children in their quest for success, while promoting sportsmanlike conduct.

“Dubai National School is always seeking to build strong partnerships with various institutions to achieve our goal of providing quality education and nurturing the special skills and interests of the students,” said Daradkeh.

“Our partnership with Dubai Chess Club will help us identify new talents among our students and allow us to provide the proper guidance and training to develop their talents and make them more productive citizens.”

Ivy Grace Paredes returns to Dubai

The X Factor UK campaign of 33-year-old former Dubai expatriate Ivy Grace Paredes may have had an unexpectedly abrupt end last month, but her journey as a performer continues. Paredes is back in her “second home” Dubai to pay tribute to the people and the fans who supported her in the UK singing competition.

“It feels great to be back because Dubai for me is my second home,” Paredes tells tabloid! in an interview. “I was recognised here more than I was recognised in the Philippines. I love the people here, my friends here, my life here for the past seven years.”

Paredes is in the UAE for a series of shows dubbed The Return of Ms. Ayegee Paredes on Friday, October 21 at Club Of Asia in Wafi Mall, and in Abu Dhabi on October 28 at Societe Club & Restaurant in Sofitel on the Corniche.

Paredes become known for her powerful rendition of Whitney Houston’s All The Man That I Need, impressing all four of the show’s judges during an audition.

“They can expect high notes as always — that is the thing that my fans expect from me. But this time I don’t want them to just hear the songs, I want to touch their hearts as well,” says Paredes. “So I’m going to sing songs that hopefully will make them cry or make them relate to every word that I am singing.”

Ahead of her show on Friday, Paredes sits down with tabloid! and shares her plans for life after X Factor.

How is life after X Factor?

It’s fine. Everything is great. I’ve experienced things that I have not experienced before. I’m not really used to things like this — the interviews. I have a lot of friends now, fans and supporters. A lot of people ask why I was not able to continue with the competition. I tell them as much as I can. I’m kind of loving the life after X Factor, so I hope I could maintain this — the fire in my career now.

What did you miss about Dubai?

The Filipinos here, my friends — they love me in a different way. They made me feel I am home. I am a friend and I am a performer. They support me in everything I do.

After X Factor, what other opportunities have opened for you?

For now, I’m still waiting and hoping for the best to come.

Are you 100 per cent ready to try again at X Factor?

Yeah, I am. I’m still interested to participate in the X Factor and continue what I have started, but there are things that I need to consider, of course — my daughter, my job. I don’t know what’s going to happen in six months’ time, so we will see. I’m thinking about that, but for now I’m really happy that X Factor reassured me that I am very much welcome next year.

What’s your biggest lesson after the whole journey on X Factor?

There’s no such thing as hopelessness. There’s no such thing as ‘too late’. If you have a dream, don’t stop chasing it. Chase that dream and make it happen. The most important thing I learnt at the X Factor was patience — patience to wait for the perfect time for you to shine or achieve your dreams. I also learnt how to work with people you don’t know and to smile whatever the situation is. To deal with everything in a very nice way, in a polite way even though you are already exhausted, you’re feeling really tired. You have so many things to do the whole day, plus the stress to study the song for two or three hours. The thing is, never give up no matter what happens. And if the journey somehow ends, yes it has ended, but it’s not the end of your life and your career. So you have to start anew. There’s no stopping, just move on.

What would have been your chances of winning?

If I was given the chance to continue with the competition, I see myself as one of the top three because that’s my goal. It’s not because of overconfidence, but I trust my capability and my determination to be in the top three. I’m really a fighter, I always tell Simon [Cowell] that I may not win this competition, but I will really give you a good fight and I did. I did give them a good fight.

If you get an offer to work again in Dubai, will you take it?

Yes, I always have the fire to come back here and work as a regular singer, but maybe not now. I don’t know what people may think about this, but the exposure that X Factor has given me is really different. I was seen in different parts of the world. I want to use that so that maybe I can have a better and good career in the Philippines. If given a choice, I want to stay in the Philippines to work and at the same time take good care of my daughter.

What are your tips for aspiring singers?

A lot of people ask me what they can do to improve themselves as an artist or as a singer. I always tell them, don’t stop singing. If you are working now as a regular artist, aim that you are going to be the main artist of the show or participate in big competitions. They should not be contented to be just there, they have to push themselves further. I don’t believe that success only depends on your voice, it should also be the heart. In anything you want in life, you just need to love it, work for it and make it grow.

What are your thoughts about Filipino artists going abroad instead of joining competitions in the Philippines?

I was thinking about that. There are so many artists who can sing well. Do we really need to prove [our]selves outside the country before we are recognised in our own country? It’s a really sad thing for me. Hopefully, the Philippines will support more of its talents. I even have more offers now here in the UAE than in the Philippines. That’s why I love the UAE because the support is not just 100 per cent, but 101 per cent.

Don’t miss it

Abu Dhabi Tour: Al Nasr Pro Cycling Team-Dubai ‘very proud’ about debut in race

The press conference was opened by the Official Abu Dhabi Tour Ambassador, Mark Cavendish. In attendance alongside the Manxman were Giro d’Italia winner Vincenzo Nibali (Italy), seven time overall Grand Tour winner Alberto Contador (Spain), the duo of puncheurs John Degenkolb (Germany) and Michael Matthews (Australia), sprinter André Greipel (Germany), Rio 2016 gold medalists Elia Viviani (Omnium) from Italy and Belgium’s Greg Van Avermaet (Individual Road Race), Costa Rican rider Andrey Amador and local hero Yousif Mirza, the highest profile rider in the UAE.

Abu Dhabi: Al Nasr Pro Cycling Team-Dubai are ‘very proud’ to be flying the flag for the UAE as the sole Emirati team in the 2016 Abu Dhabi Tour as they rub shoulders with some of the hottest names of the sport over the next four days.

Led by Yousuf Mirza, who competed in the road race at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Al Nasr are the second professional cycling team in the UAE along with Skydive Dubai Pro Cycling Team — Al Ahli.

They were launched at the start of the year by the Al Nasr Sports Club and took part in February’s Dubai Tour.

This will be their debut in the Abu Dhabi Tour, however, the second edition of which gets under way on Thursday. “It will be a great experience for Nasr and local riders to race with the biggest riders in the world and we are very proud to be part of this,” Mirza said.

“The Abu Dhabi Tour on the World Tour is a very good step. When something big happens in your country, it makes it bigger, you feel prouder than normal. We’re really happy to see cycling growing so quickly here.”

Mirza, 28, qualified to represent the UAE at the Olympic road race in Rio after he claimed the silver medal at the 2015 Asian Cycling Championship. He’s a four-time and reigning UAE Road Race champion. “The experience of riding the Olympics was amazing. Now the Abu Dhabi Tour will show that we have strong cycling in the UAE.”

Mirza and his teammates will line up alongside cycling luminaries such as Mark Cavendish and Alberto Contador in the four-stage, 555-kilometre event.

With 30 Tour de France stage wins to his name, Cavendish is regarded as the greatest sprinter in the history of cycling and the official ambassador of the Abu Dhabi Tour.

The Spanish legend Contador is a two-time Tour de France champion and he and Cavendish will be bidding to compensate for the absence of Sir Bradley Wiggins.

The five-time Olympic champion withdrew last week as controversy continues to swirl over his use of therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) to take a banned substance.

Meanwhile, the Abu Dhabi Tour’s worldwide importance has been exemplified by the news that coverage of the four stages will be broadcast in 177 countries, across all five continents. Thirteen television networks will broadcast the race, seven of them live.

Abu Dhabi Sports, the host broadcaster, will produce and show the full coverage of each stage, from the first turn of the pedals to the finish-line victories, in the UAE and across the whole Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region.

Now pay by Nol at retail stores

Officials use the Nol card at a Zoom store in Dubai World Trade Centre metro station.

Dubai: Payment for your purchase at convenience stores is now as simple as tapping your Nol card at the counter, officials said on Wednesday.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has now expanded the capability of its automated payment system, Nol, making it available across a network of retail stores.

The only mode of payment for metro, tram and buses, Nol card was recently made available as a payment option at Dubai’s public parks as well as on taxis. It can also be used to pay for parking.

In the new facility, purchases worth up to Dh5,000 can now be made through Nol cards across Zoom convenience stores at metro stations as well as in petrol stations.

On Wednesday, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) signed an MoU with Network International to formally launch Nol payment for retail purchases.

According to Abdullah Al Madani, CEO of RTA’s Corporate Support Services Sector, the update doesn’t require a change of cards on the part of the users and the facility will be available for all the 13 million users of different types of Nol cards.

“All existing cards can be used to pay the bills at Zoom stores. We are pleased to offer this additional benefit to the Nol users, who won’t have to worry about not having cash for any quick purchases,” said Al Madani, following the launch of the service.

He said that the new facility will make cash redundant, allowing people the safety of keeping the Nol cards sufficiently funded and using it for multiple purpose.

The e-wallet in the silver and gold Nol cards can have maximum purse of Dh1,000, while the Blue personalised Nol card can have up to Dh5,000.

“It is safer to have cash in one e-purse rather carrying hard cash or debit cards. It is easy to carry and easy to use. Most people keep their Nol cards in their phone case so this facility will help them make quick purchases even if they forget their wallets,” said Al Madani.

Apart from Zoom stores, the payment option will soon be available across 1,000 retail stores this year and up to 10,000 store by next year.

“We are in talks with a number of retail outlets. We have been working with most of the retailers including major supermarkets providing credit and debit card facilities and all we need to do is to update the card readers to accept the Nol cards,” said Bhairav Trivedi, CEO of Network International Payment Soultions.

He added that although the facility will allow purchases as big as Dh5,000 on Blue Nol cards, the service is in no way for purchases of luxury goods.

“The idea is to provide a safe tap and go payment option for regular commuters,” he added.

Al Madani assured that the payment mode is safe and secure.

“Nol card is a safe and secure mode of payment and it will continue to be secure even with this option. If the card is lost, people will have an option of calling the RTA immediately and having the card blocked by providing the Nol ID number and have the cash refunded or transferred to another card,” said Al Madani.

Though the anonymous silver or gold Nol card is as secure as the personalised blue card, he urged commuters to go for the blue cards for its added benefit of having the owner’s picture and name, which makes it harder to misuse.

How to use a Nol card at retail stores

Buy a new Nol card or use the existing one

Shop at any of the Zoom stores (1,000 more stores by end of this year)

Opt to pay by Nol card

Tap the card on the reading machine

Have your receipt and enjoy your purchase

Etihad Airways makes its fashion runway debut in style

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has successfully completed sponsorship of its first six Fashion Weeks, in partnership with WME / IMG.

Etihad Airways’ support of global fashion began with Fashion Weeks in Sydney, Berlin and Mumbai, and culminated with the three major Fashion Weeks in New York, London and Milan.

Patrick Pierce, Etihad Airways Vice President for Sponsorship, said, “Our custom partnerships with global Fashion Weeks began in style, with inspirational activations taking place across Europe, Asia and Australia, coupled with unique designer collaborations in each location.

“This alignment is a natural one for our commercial business, but also presents significant brand visibility and advocacy opportunities. It also gives us valuable access to influencers, opinion leaders, media and other stakeholders within the industry, in a manner previously not possible.”

The long-term sponsorship represents an ideal fit for the airline, building a strong link between the quality of the Etihad Airways brand and the ever-evolving fashion industry. The partnership allows the airline to boost its reputation as a provider of world-leading service, hospitality, design and style through the unique association, by promoting passenger and cargo services to the industry in markets which are strategically important to Etihad Airways and the Etihad Airways Partner airlines.

Over the past five months, Etihad Airways has worked with fashion designers and influencers, including Oscar de la Renta in Sydney, Manish Malhotra, a favourite designer of Bollywood stars at Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai, Jimmy Choo for its 20th anniversary celebrations in both New York and London, and, more recently, with Richard Mortimer, the editor of Rollacoaster magazine, who curated a photo exhibition for the airline on display at the Press and Buyers lounge at London Fashion Week.

At Milan Fashion Week, Etihad Airways and its partner Alitalia collaborated with fashion illustrator Megan Hess by hosting a dedicated space at the Unicredit Pavilion, where she personally sketched over 200 of Etihad Airways’ VIPs and special guests.

To celebrate the opening of New York Fashion Week, Etihad Airways flew a NYFW-branded Airbus A380 from Abu Dhabi to New York’s JFK International Airport on 8th September, 2016. Upon the aircraft’s arrival, the airline staged a photo shoot in the Etihad Airways First and Business Class Lounge with supermodel Amber Valetta, who features prominently in Jimmy Choo’s 20th anniversary campaign.

Nakheel reports 2016 nine month net profit

Nakheel today announced a net profit of Dh3.91 billion for the first nine months of 2016, an increase of 8.3 percent on the profit of Dh3.61 billion in the same period last year.

The company recorded a net profit of Dh955 million for third quarter of 2016, 22 percent up on Q3 2015 profit of Dh781 million.

“The growth in net profit reflects stable market conditions,” said Nakheel. As with previous results periods, Nakheel’s development business, with its ongoing handovers of properties to customers, and the company’s growing retail, leasing and leisure businesses all contributed to the results for the period ending 30th September 2016.

Ali Rashid Lootah, Nakheel Chairman, said, “The growth in our net profit for the first nine months of 2016 compared to the same period in 2015 is a sign of a stable and mature local real estate market. The results also reflect positively on our business strategy to invest in our income-generating asset portfolio. We expect to further consolidate on our position and finish the year on an even stronger note.

“The last nine months has seen a range of significant achievements for Nakheel, including the biggest milestone in our history: settling all of the Dh4.4 billion of trade creditor Sukuk that was due on 25th August 2016. This was the last outstanding obligation from the financial restructuring concluded in August 2011. We thank the Government of Dubai, without whom this milestone would not have been possible, for its ongoing support. With the restructuring behind us, we can now operate with more flexibility to achieve our business and financial objectives.”

The Jebel Ali Free Zone, Jafza, is showcasing an integrated package of services and smart new solutions for customers and companies during GITEX Technology Week 2016.

In line with the vision of Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to transform Dubai into a Smart City, Jafza has introduced an array of ‘tech driven’ solutions throughout the free zone.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman, Chief Executive Officer of DP World and Chairman of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, said, “We aim to transform Jafza into an ideal free zone through the development and use of the latest applications, becoming a global knowledge and innovation hub.”

Jafza is a new service provided on the Jafza Mobile App for incident reporting within the free zone to improve the community.

ADNOC to create world class shipping, marine and services company

ADNOC announced today its intention to consolidate the operations of three of its shipping, marine and services companies to create a single world-class entity.

The Abu Dhabi National Tanker Company, ADNATCO, Petroleum Services Company, ESNAAD, and Abu Dhabi Petroleum Ports Operating Company, IRSHAD, will be integrated to drive efficiency, optimise resources and assets across their various operations to maximise value.

Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of State and ADNOC Group CEO, said, “This consolidation is aligned with our long-term vision and the core pillars of our business strategy, focused on efficiency, performance, profitability and people.

“By leveraging the experience and assets across the three companies, we aim to deliver an improved and cost-effective service to meet the needs of the ADNOC Group. The consolidation will capture synergies, generate savings and ensure value creation. Upon completion of the integration, the new company will be uniquely positioned to further extend its services to customers worldwide.”

The company will enjoy a legacy of over 40 years of international shipping experience, marine and port management, oil field services and logistics, across the oil and gas sector. It will provide global seaborne transportation and storage services related to petroleum products and other shipping segments.

The new company will also offer a range of marine, ports and closely related oilfield and logistical services, including petroleum ports operation, pilotage services, supervision of crude transfer operations, single point mooring terminal maintenance services, high speed craft operations, and port and container yard operations.

The new company will operate over 165 vessels, including LNG vessels, bulk carriers, chemical and products tankers, container and container-feeder vessels, as well as modern multi-purpose vessels and support vessels. In the longer term, the consolidated company will enjoy a competitive advantage based on its ability to deliver high quality, integrated cost-effective services across the hydrocarbon value chain.

Work on consolidating the operating companies into a single marine and services company is underway under the guidance of an ADNOC-appointed steering committee. The integration is expected to complete by the end of 2017.

The National Gas and Shipping Company, in which ADNOC owns a 70 percent stake, will remain a separate company. ADNOC intends, however, to transfer its NGSCO shareholding to the new company, and integrate its operations to maximise potential synergies.

Dubai reaches 100,000 rooms milestone following opening of Westin Dubai

Key players in Dubai’s tourism industry came together to mark the city’s milestone achievement of reaching 100,000 rooms across its expanding hotel and hotel apartment inventory following the soft opening of The Westin Dubai, Al Habtoor City. In attendance were His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism), and Mohammed Khalaf Al Habtoor, Vice Chairman and CEO of Al Habtoor Group, together with Marriott International’s Alex Kyriakidis, President and Managing Director Middle East and Africa, and Guido de Wilde, Chief Operating Officer Middle East.

Commenting on the occasion, His Excellency Almarri said: “For the hotel sector, high demand from international travellers, and the consequent growth in tourism volumes, has been the cornerstone of fostering continued investment in supply enhancement, which has seen us cross this historic 100,000 rooms threshold. This has been a journey undertaken collaboratively and achieved through the enduring strength of our public and private partnerships that underscore Dubai’s maturing prominence on the world stage.”

The quality and high standards of Dubai’s hotel industry have long been a defining characteristic of the city’s tourism offering and a contributor to the destination’s overall attractiveness to visitors.

The new Westin hotel – the second Westin-branded property to open in the city – is no exception and confirms the importance the industry places on providing guests with a truly exceptional, superlative experience. This is also reflected in the latest MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index report, which ranks Dubai as the fourth most visited city in the world as well, as the number one city for international overnight visitor spend.

Mohammed Al Habtoor, Vice-Chairman and CEO, Al Habtoor Group said: “The Al Habtoor Group continues to grow in unison with the economy of Dubai. Our vision is in line with the Government. We now have seven quality hotels in the city contributing significantly to the hospitality sector here. The addition of The Westin Dubai – Al Habtoor City adds another 1,004 superior rooms to Dubai. It is the largest Westin in Europe Middle East and Africa. It complements our other hotels within the Hotel Collection at Al Habtoor City. Our hospitality portfolio in Dubai is unique and draws people to the city, offering travelers with a multitude of luxury choices.”

Marriott International’s Alex Kyriakidis commented: “We are proud that the opening of The Westin Dubai, Al Habtoor City has helped Dubai achieve its 100,000 rooms milestone. Dubai is now home to 30 of our properties across the world’s most-renowned brands, making Marriott International the largest hotel operator in the city. With plans to nearly double our presence in this market in the next five years, we are positioned to be the number one hospitality partner leading to Expo 2020. Marriott International is committed to supporting the vision of Dubai, led by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, to strengthen Dubai’s position as a leading destination for global travel. We see great potential in the future of this destination, and continue to support the efforts of Dubai Tourism while remaining focused on creating memorable experiences for visitors across Marriott’s brands.”

Looking to the future, Dubai Tourism expects occupied room nights in hotels and hotel apartments to reach 35.9 million, representing a 10.8% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from the end of 2015 to the end of 2018. As such, the overall room supply is expected to reflect similar growth, reaching 134,000 rooms by the end of 2018.

With demand increasing, overall projected occupancy rates until 2018 are expected to be maintained at a strong 77% approximately, ensuring Dubai’s hotel industry retains its attractiveness while allowing the emirate to build stronger competitiveness as a global tourist destination.

Furthermore, buoyed by a dynamically evolving and diversified destination offering, Dubai Tourism expects to expand guests’ overall Length of Stay (LOS – hotel nights) to four days by 2018.

This is in addition to volume growth in international overnight visitors spurred by increasing air connectivity and seat capacity primarily delivered by Dubai’s two home-grown carriers, Emirates Airline and flydubai. Both these factors collectively drive sustained demand for paid accommodation.

Ultimately, the growth in the city’s hotel capacity, the diversity of its accommodation mix and the breadth of its growing proposition, supported by airlift and city-wide infrastructure, are all aimed at cohesively creating a multiplier effect on Dubai’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and furthering tourism’s contribution to economic growth over the coming years.

His Excellency Almarri added: “The hotel and hospitality sector continues to share strong interdependencies and complementarities with the growth of tourism, aviation, infrastructure and other destination proposition enhancements, as it has done historically. The concerted efforts of Dubai Government to continually evolve the emirate’s transport and logistics infrastructure via committed investments for capacity expansion through to 2020, coupled with Dubai Tourism’s enablement of various tourism assets, ranging from theme parks and cultural districts to specialised event venues and entertainment offerings, have laid stable foundations to systematically grow visitation volumes to the city in line with 2020 targets. As such, they also prudently influence development plans for the hotel sector.”

Dubai Civil Defence transforms communications with Avaya

The Directorate General of Civil Defence, Dubai, has announced an agreement with Avaya to transform its communications capabilities and increase user satisfaction with the department’s Smart Communication solutions for customer service, in addition to agreeing to adopt Avaya Equinox, which was announced globally today from GITEX Technology Week 2016.

The solution, implemented through Connect IT, an Avaya partner, will be developed to its full potential to ensure that happiness of end-users is delivered, of citizens and residents that contact the department, and of employees and teams that need to collaborate to deliver on tasks and projects.

Dubai Civil Defence announced today the launch of the Third Dimension service, which facilitates communications between customers and consultants from the Directorate to approve building plans, without the need to visit a branch.

At GITEX Technology Week 2016, the Directorate General of Civil Defence and Avaya signed the agreement, which is designed to elevate the department’s communication infrastructure and align with the ‘Smart Dubai’ vision, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The technology solution that Avaya is delivering for Dubai Civil Defence consists of numerous communication modes, such as voice calls and message services, instant text messaging among staff, and video calling facilities that can be used at desks, and even on laptops and on mobile phones.

The holistic communication solution for a department that has a high number of mobile staff can deliver the same collaborative experience from within as well as outside the physical network.

Avaya announced today its Equinox unified communications platform, which integrates all communications channels within the applications and browsers employees use most frequently for their work.

The Directorate General is the first customer globally to sign an agreement to deploy Avaya Equinox.

The Directorate General has increased its focus and investment in this solution with a view to updating its communication systems to increase customer and team engagement and satisfaction.

The system is built with strong security parameters, ensuring that sensitive internal and customer communication regarding personal and property safety remains entirely confidential and secure.

Dubai Civil Defence is showcasing their communications systems and more at GITEX 2016, alongside innovation in areas such as video-based collaboration with customers to review and approve plans.

These, and a host of other innovations, all uniquely position the Dubai Civil Defence as having a strong positive impact on the nation’s Happiness Index, a key focus parameter for national leadership as well as the public and private sectors in the UAE.

QUOTES

“Our vision is for everyone who interacts with us to experience a truly Smart Service. This extends beyond individuals who call into our contact centre, to companies that work with us on plan review and approvals, as well as our employees and teams that are often outside the offices and working in various parts of the city at all times. By developing a holistic communications solution with Avaya and Connect IT, we look forward to achieving our ‘Smart Vision’ goals, and proudly being a key component of a world-renowned Smart City – Dubai.”

Major General and expert Rashid Thani Al Matrooshi, Director General of the Dubai Civil Defence.

“We have been vocal supporters of the UAE’s Smart Vision, and working with organisations such as the Directorate General of Civil Defence in Dubai has been great learning for Avaya as well. Today’s agreement is continuing the partnership that started last year between Avaya and the Directorate General of Civil Defence. It is rare to see others places with the pace of change that the UAE moves at, and to bring even traditionally offline departments onto a digital grid is to really bring the Dubai Smart City vision to life. The Civil Defence department is approaching this from the perspective of user happiness, which is a parameter that everyone can rally behind and once again drive the UAE to the top of the global ranking.”

Nidal Abou-ltaif, President, Avaya International

GITEX is hosting 600 exhibiting companies from 60 countries, gathering to showcase the latest technologies at the largest technology exchange and marketplace for the Middle East and Africa.

du And Zero1 Enable Customers To Experience The Power Of Li-Fi Technology At du's Stand At GITEX 2016

UAE-based innovative telecom service provider, du, and its Li-Fi technology partner, Zero1, successfully demonstrated real life, real-time Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) practical use cases during GITEX technology week. Visitors had the opportunity to experience Li-Fi; this future technology is a visible light communication system that uses light from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as a medium to deliver network, mobile and high-speed communication in a similar manner as Wi-Fi but with clear line of site. The current and future growth of wireless data traffic will mean that the radio frequency spectrum will not provide sufficient resources by 2025. Li-Fi will complement Wi-Fi technology to ensure a broader spectrum for seamless communication in the smart city of tomorrow. Visitors were thrilled to experience Internet over Li-Fi, including video and music streaming and geo-location.

“Li-Fi creates incredible benefits for consumers and enterprises. Due to the efficient process of data stream generation, Li-Fi signals help achieve exponentially higher speeds, provide more bandwidth and are more secure than conventional Wi-Fi channels. Moreover, Li-Fi technology results in no radiation or external network interference and provides extremely high data ranges,” said Jihad Tayara, Vice President Business Development & Partnerships, du. “We were so pleased with the reaction from GITEX attendees regarding this new technology, which we believe will revolutionise communication in the smart city even further.”

Mark Fleschen, Chief Executive Officer, Zero.1, said: “We are honored to collaborate with du to develop multiple Li-Fi-enabled solutions which provide a variety of analytics, communication and management systems, and customer engagement solutions, Marc added. We are committed to establishing the UAE as the birth place of city-wide tangible and usable Li-Fi applications, and for it to be recognised as a regional and global hub for the early adoption of Li-Fi technology.”

Rogue Sessions with the James Taylor Quartet

ROGUE SESSIONS

Pairing food with art, sound and spoken word, Rogue Sessions is an intimate evening of dining and performance. Each week we host artists, musicians, performers, DJs and poets from all over the globe. Our stage is set for an evening where guests can travel through a sensory and immersive experience with food and live performance taking the lime light.

For our official launch on May 27th we have perfectly paired food and music in the cultural capital of Dubai, DIFC.

Enjoy our crafted dining experience from executive chef Dom Robinson as he takes your taste buds on a journey with his eclectic, innovative and delightful food, alongside free flowing house beverages before taking a seat front of stage to enjoy an exclusive and intimate performance with the James Taylor Quartet.

James Taylor, one of the great British instrumentalists of his generation, has taken his trademark howling Hammond sound to the masses for over 25 years; still famed for its upbeat, energetic live shows… with no sign of slowing down. The band’s relentlessly entertaining tunes take inspiration from the rare-groove style funk, and boogaloo funk of the 60s and 70s and, the band is, without a doubt, one of the most important jazz-pop crossover outfits in British live musical history today.

Skip forward 25 years and JTQ has evolved into one of the most exciting and well-respected touring bands in the UK. With numerous albums to its name, the band’s recorded output is not to be scoffed at. ‘Prolific’ is an understatement, with albums touching genres as diverse as jazz, funk, soul, rock, and even rap, not to mention a handful of library albums in between. Each album is an absolute must for any Hammond fan: James’ playing providing a solid and accomplished lead as always. Live, the band is explosive, with a breathtaking, diverse unmatched back catalogue.
