Gigi Hadid is in Dubai: Here’s what she said and did

“She’s one of us. We consider her one of our icons,” said Mohammed Al Yassir, as he waited with his two young daughters, Ilham and Tamara, along with hundreds of fans at The Dubai Mall for top model Gigi Hadid on Monday evening.

“My daughters have been following her every move and they really wanted to see her. So I had to take special permission from their school so they can leave early.”

“She’s Palestinian just like me, I just love her,” 12-year-old Ilham said.

Another fan, Cara, said she loved her because she is so down to earth. “She cares about her fans and she’s such a great model too,” said the 13-year-old.

Hadid landed in Dubai early in the day as part of her multi-city #TogetherTour to promote her collaboration with fashion brand Tommy Hilfiger.

The 21-year-old Palestinian-American, who has travelled to Berlin and Milan to showcase her TommyXGigi capsule collection, met and interacted with fans who waited for more than two hours at the mall. Thirty people were picked from the crowd who got a chance to meet the model face-to-face.

“Coming to the Middle East, it always feels like home,” Hadid told Gulf News tabloid! earlier in the day. “I’ve got family here, even in Dubai.”

The TommyXGigi collection, which premiered during New York Fashion Week on September 9, features women’s sportswear, footwear and accessories, including watches, sunglasses and fragrance. On Sunday evening, designer Hilfiger told the New York Post that the apparel collection was already 50 per cent sold out.

“She has a very cool sense of style she brought us. And she is not only a supermodel, but a social media star. She has fans all over the world and they want to wear what Gigi wears. They want to eat where she eats, they want to drive the same kind of car she drives. They want to have a piece of Gigi,” the iconic designer said at his show at New York Fashion Week.

Hadid, with more than 23 million followers on Instagram and three million on Twitter, is one of the top social media influencers. She regularly posts about her life as a glamorous model, including her relationship with singer Zayn Malik.

“Obviously I couldn’t have asked for a better platform to start with than the Tommy Hilfiger brand,” she said of her collaboration. “That gave me the opportunity to learn so much from them, and kind of get my feet wet and then I can go execute it myself.”

The daughter of Yolanda Foster, known for her role in reality show The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and Palestinian-born real estate mogul Mohammad Hadid, she began her modelling career when she was just two years old, and is now one of the busiest models in the world along with her younger sister Bella.

Gigi’s close friend and model Kendall Jenner was also in the UAE. DJ Neptune, the CEO of UAE-based celebrity management company Next Class Agency, posted a photo on Instagram on Sunday night of Jenner wearing a niqab outside Burj Khalifa.

“Sightseeing with @KendallJenner in Dubai. #UltimatePrivacy #AngelInDisguise,” he captioned the photo.

While some online have however accused him of photoshopping Jenner into the photo, Jenner 20, and Hadid, 21, are known to often travel together, mostly for work.

The pair were last in the UAE here for a New Year’s Eve party to ring in 2015 along with Selena Gomez and singer Cody Simpson, and also travelled to Abu Dhabi to visit the Shaikh Zayed Mosque.

The #TogetherTour, which kicked off on September 2, will take Hadid to Shanghai next on October 14.
