Robert De Niro talks Trump in Dubai

The actor — in town for a tourism investment conference — says he’d still like to punch the Republican candidate in the face

Robert De Niro speaks to media in Dubai on October 9, 2016. The actor was in the UAE to promote tourism in Antigua and Barbuda.

Robert De Niro, who on Saturday featured in a viral video saying he would like to punch Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in the face, has responded to actor Jon Voight, who claims he is “ashamed” of De Niro.

“I think that Jon Voight, he’s a nice guy, but he’s delusional,” De Niro told Gulf News on Sunday morning.

The actor, 73, is in Dubai to promote Antigua & Barbuda as tourist destinations, but the hot topic of conversation was the US election.

“The Republican Party has rationalised that this guy is sane. That this guy should be president. It’s awful. They’re going to self-destruct. And now I just read the [New York] Times this morning that 150 Republicans are pulling out, it’s on the front page. How could you align yourself with him? It’s shameful.”

During a business conference earlier in the day, De Niro was asked what question he would have for Trump at the upcoming town hall.

“I don’t even know what kind of question to ask him, because he’s so stupid. There’s nothing to talk about,” he said.

Asked whether he would still like to punch him, as he had previously stated, he said, “I’d love to punch him in the face.”
