Former Al Jazira and Al Wasl defender Lucas Neill declared bankrupt

Once dubbed ‘Lucash Neill’, Aussie is estimated to have earned $40 million during his career

Dubai: Former Al Jazira and Al Wasl defender Lucas Neill has been declared bankrupt in the UK, according to reports.

The 38-year-old, who captained Australia and had a long spell in the Premier League in England, earned an estimated $40 million (Dh147 million) in his two decade career from 1995 to 2014.

He played for Abu Dhabi’s Al Jazira during the 2011/12 season, followed by a year at Al Wasl in Dubai.

London-based insolvency firm Begbies Traynor were appointed trustees to the bankruptcy last week.

“Mr. Neill is due to be interviewed when he returns to the UK in the coming weeks, at which point the trustees will be able to obtain the background information required to determine the full scale of Mr. Neill’s debts,” Dale Hernon of Begbies Traynor said in a statement.

“At this early stage of proceedings, it is currently unclear to what extent any funds will be recovered.”

Neill played for English sides Millwall, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United and Everton, before spells with Turkey’s Galatasary and then UAE’s Al Jazira and Al Wasl. He joined Australia’s Sydney FC and Japan’s Omiya Ardija, before returning to England with Watford and Doncaster Rovers. He made 96 appearances for his country between 1996 and 2013.

According to reports, Neill, 38, had been involved in a number of high-profile investments during his career, including a US property portfolio and a coaching business in Sydney. Administrators say it will take months to investigate Neill’s finances and establish the full extent of his debts.

He was reported to have turned down a move to Liverpool in favour of joining West Ham in 2007 because the Hammers offered more money, earning him the dubious nickname ‘Lucash Neill’, but the defender denied this, saying it was purely for football reasons.
