The UAE military team will camp there for several weeks in preparation for the main adventure, which is attempting to climb the world’s highest peak as the first official military team in the region.
The climbers have previously completed a nine day trek from the village of Lokla, staying overnight in several villages along the trail before reaching the Everest base camp.
Dr. Hashel Obaid Al Tunaiji, one of the team members and the doctor accompanying the mission, said that all the team members are in good health and have gradually adapted to the high altitudes and the decreasing levels of oxygen.
Abu Dhabi: His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, congratulated the UAE Armed Forces team for reaching the summit of Mount Everest.
In a handwritten letter to the team, Shaikh Mohammad expressed his joy at the team’s achievement and their efforts in overcoming extreme challenges.
Shaikh Mohammad hailed the team for being persistent in their adventure and succeeding in reaching the summit through a team effort and by undergoing extensive physical and psychological preparations.
Shaikh Mohammad praised the efforts of women mountaineers in the Armed Forces who successfully completed the challenge and reached the South Base Camp in Khumbu Glacier that lies at an altitude of 5,363 metres above sea level in the Himalayas.
Shaikh Mohammad’s letter was read out to the mountaineers at the South Base Camp through walkie-talkies.
The mountaineers expressed their heartfelt appreciation to Shaikh Mohammad, who closely followed their progress and encouraged them to keep pushing forward in order to complete the climb.
The team arrived at the third camp, which is 7,162 metres above sea level, after crossing camps one and two, which are among the fourth most advanced camps on Everest ranging in height between 6,400 and 7,500 metres.
The team includes 16 climbers, 13 of whom are military personnel of different ranks in the UAE Armed Forces, including a doctor specialising in sports medicine and altitude physiology, along with three experts specialised in mountaineering expeditions.
The team is the biggest military team in the region to conduct such an expedition and one of the first official teams worldwide to climb Everest, which stands at 8,858 metres, after the earthquake which hit the area in 2015.
