UK upgrades e-visa waiver scheme for UAE citizens

Dubai: Travellers from the UAE who faced problems with the UK electronic visa waiver scheme and were delayed from entering Britain when they didn’t enter exact personal details will have a far easier way to fly starting next week.

To make UK travel easier from the UAE, an upgraded electronic visa waiver system will go live on Monday in which travellers will “upload a copy of their passport biographic data so that details can be checked for accuracy prior to travel,” said a statement issued by the UK Embassy in UAE on Thursday.

Electronic visa waivers are good for only one trip into the UK and an e-visa waiver application must be made before every single journey.

Streamlining the system to proof applications for errors should end instances since the introduction of the waiver system in 2014 when some travellers complained they were denied entry on to aircraft because the names and details on their passports did not match their e-applications.

“In early 2014, the UK introduced the EVW scheme, allowing passport holders from the UAE to travel to the UK for a visit of up to six months without having first to obtain a visa,” said an official in the statement. “Unlike the first version of EVW, which relied on passengers entering their personal information exactly as it appears on their passport, the new EVW form asks passengers to upload a copy of their passport biographic data page so that details can be checked for accuracy prior to travel. This means that input errors can be picked up, significantly reducing the risk of issues when boarding or entering the UK.”

The revised e-system also features questions in both English and Arabic making it easier for users in the UAE.

An estimated 50,000 Emiratis visit the UK every year.

A new £15 fee is being added to cover the cost of the upgraded system.

Immigration Minister James Brokenshire said that, “Since the introduction of the scheme in 2014, tens of thousands of travellers from the United Arab Emirates have benefited from using an electronic visa waiver to come to the UK, which reflects the growing importance of our relationship with the region. We know that visitor numbers from UAE are continuing to rise, and we look forward to welcoming more travellers to the UK for business and tourism.”
