Dubai mums give healthy food bags to workers

Group marks biggest single-day outreach on Friday by givng out goodies to over 1,200 workers

Dubai: Marking their biggest single-day outreach to date, the Dubai Mums group carried out the fourth week of its healthy food distribution campaign for the labour community last weekend, adding swimwear to the their list of goodies.

During the campaign coninciding with Ramadan, over 1,200 workers at the Dubai accommodation received a bag of vegetables and fruits, with almost half of them taking home swimming shorts and shoes, along with a Dh50 gift voucher.

The Dubai Mums Helping Hands’, a charity of volunteers on Facebook, has inspired the campaign for the second consecutive year with the aim of improving the diets of workers by ensuring that fruits and vegetables are a part of their daily nutrition.

Joining the cause on Friday, Coega Sunwear helped distribute swimwear to workers in support of their ‘Drop Your Shorts’ programme.

“Coega Sunwear is dedicated to outfitting our labour community in proper swimwear so they too can enjoy our city’s beaches. They joined us with over 500 pairs of swim shorts and swim shoes, which helped ensure that our long line of gentlemen kept on receiving,” said Stephanie Sutherland, founder of the ‘Free healthy food Fridays’ campaign.

Over 80 volunteers, including families and children, who joined the distribution bus, helped hand out donated bags of fruits and vegetables to the workers within one hour.

The Dubai Mums group also teamed up with The Amana Group, who matched the group’s estimated donation with Dh50 gift cards from LuLu Supermarket.

“Once we were contacted by the Dubai Mums group, we decided to contribute with Dh5,000 in Dh50 gift vouchers to the workers at the accommodation and others in the neighbourhood who stood in line. We work hard to provide the best for our workers. Happy employees equals to productive company,” said Jad Aoun, communication manager at Amana contracting.

Hoping to surpass last year’s numbers, the Dubai Mums group are aiming to reach more than 2500 workers this year during their five-week campaign. With one more week to go, the healthy food campaign is aiming to collect as many food donations as possible before June 10. “Each adult who would like to volunteer on a Friday will need to donate at least 10 grocery bags of fruits and vegetables,” said Sutherland. Each bag should be around two kilos, and can include any fruit or vegetable.

Those who want to donate food bags but are unable to join the distribution bus, may do so by contacting the group on Facebook for further information on the drop-off points.

“Friday was a special day for all of us and the outreach — care, and appreciation from all sides was a treat to witness,” added Sutherland.
