UAE’s smart city surge and a rapid implementation of latest technology into various departments including health could see it overtake the west in terms of faster adoption among the local population.


The digitisation of medicines and hospital practices across the region is gaining momentum with several new initiatives and joint ventures.


Dubai Health Authority has taken the lead in items of rolling out mobile applications to those within its jurisdiction with at least half a dozen web and mobile solutions.


According to a recent report, the global home healthcare market is expected to reach a value of about $303 billion by 2020.


The report, titled ‘Global Home Healthcare Market – Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast, 2014 – 2020’, states that the global home healthcare market is expected to expand at 8.10 per cent during the period.


Technological advancements and growth of mobile adoption and reducing cost of manufacturing sensors have all contributed to the adoption of technology into healthcare.


Today, all vital stats can be monitored using a mobile device and transmitted to a remote location or a hospital.


Another recent survey by PwC Middle East pointed out that 67 per cent of the respondents across the region willing to receive healthcare in a non-traditional setting – such as at home, over the phone or in a mobile unit.


If technology were available, more than half of respondents would choose to have a live consultation with a specialist via their smartphone (62 per cent) or wirelessly check their pacemaker or defibrillator (50 per cent).


 


Here are some of the regional healthcare related apps that could change the way the healthcare sector could move ahead during the coming decade.


Afya Arabia – A complete healthcare and management solution in Kuwait


Afya Arabia is a Kuwait-based initiative that aims at combining all major health and medical related features most commonly used by patients into a single application.


Using the application, that is currently available both on iOS and Android users can book doctor appointment, schedule home blood and lab tests, imaging services, shop for medicines online, tele-consulting, and apply for home care.



Users can also pay a nominal fee online when they book an appointment or schedule a service.


A premium paid service will enables special appointments, even when doctors and clinics are busy, encrypted storage of medical records, SMS notifications etc.

Afya’s initiative is aimed at creating an ecosystem where all its stakeholders can collaborate and share resources using technology, thus creating a stress- and anxiety-free care experience at the touch of a button,” is how the company


Sympaticus – online psychotherapy for women and by women


Sympaticus is an online psychotherapy and wellbeing platform that is aimed at emotionally challenged women across the Middle East and Africa.


The yet to be launched application allows women to log in, identify a therapist and discuss their problems and even find solutions all within the privacy of their smartphone.



According to the founders Dr. Nicole Braun-Elias, Joe Zaarour and Ramzi Nohra from Lebanon, the app can be helpful to anyone facing a breakup, job loss, parenting struggle, loss of a loved one, burnout, sexual identity struggle, or depression.


“Sympaticus is for women, powered by women!,” is how the app is described and those suffering from depression are promised, “In just 14 weeks, you’ll be yourself again!”


Users can log in and find experienced female doctors and therapists who the founders say will motivate the user to achieve happiness again.


Users will be able to log in to the app at any time 24×7 and find remote therapist and psychologist sessions.


Saada – Dubai’s health insurance initiative for Emiratis


Saada is a health insurance program for the citizens of Dubai. An initiative by the Dubai Health Authority it aims to provide insurance coverage for citizens who do not currently benefit from any government health program.


The program provides treatment through a large network of healthcare providers in the private sector in addition to the services they currently receive through the DHA healthcare centres. It uses the Emirates ID card or the national ID card instead of the conventional insurance card which can be used to register and take advantage of all the benefits of the program.
