A typical week sees the airline operating more than 3,600 flights, with over 96,000 flights operated in the first half of 2016.

Dubai-based carrier is the world’s largest international airline currently serving 154 destinations across 81 countries on six continents operating 252 aircraft.

Luck deserts Dubai-owned horses at gloomy Goodwood

Goodwood: Lady Luck gave a cold shoulder to Dubai-owned contenders at Glorious Goodwood’s much-anticipated Ladies Day, which was held under cloudy skies.

Ode To Evening, hoping to give Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai a second victory at the meeting following Yalta’s success in the Molecomb Stakes on Wednesday, was beaten a head by You’re Hired in a close battle between two lesser-fancied horses in the 15-horse Matchbook Betting Exchange Stakes.

Ridden by Godolphin’s Australian rider James McDonald, the Mark Johnston-trained Ode To Evening was shaping like a winner until he was overpowered by Martin Dwyer’s mount inside the final furlong. Only a head separated the two runners at the post.

The race is one of several fiercely competitive handicaps at the Festival while the winners of the race often go on to make their mark in Pattern races.

Winning trainer Amanda Perrett was delighted to win the contest for the second time after Art Trader in 2004 and said: “He is by Dalakhani so we were not expecting him to be particularly precocious. He was very brave as he was a little bit green throughout the race, but he got there in the end. He didn’t have much weight on his back and was lucky to get in the handicap.

“Hopefully he will improve and mature as the year goes on. I’d like to give him a break then maybe bring him back here at the end of August.”

Meanwhile, Godolphin’s Blue Point went down by a neck by Qatar-owned Mehmas in a well-contested renewal of the six-furlong contest which offers a sharp test for sprinters hoping to announce themselves as stars of the future.

Blue Point, ridden by leading Glorious Goodwod rider James Doyle (4 wins until this race) appeared to be getting the upper hand but Mehmas, under Frankie Dettori’s fierce handling, battled hard to score by a narrow margin.

Charlie Appleby remained positive despite having seen Blue Point lose his unbeaten record on his third start and said: “The winner is a nice horse who has been placed at Royal Ascot and is a July Stakes winner.

“His experience caught us out and it was the first time that he’s really been asked to go about his business. Mehmas has just outbattled us.

“He will come on for that and he’s a talented horse. We knew it was going to be a struggle for pace in the race and we wanted to go out there and keep it simple and get him into a rhythm.

“We will probably look to the Prix Morny (France) and give the Gimcrack a miss.”

The victory took Dettori’s career tally to the 2,995-winner mark.

Later in the evening, Big Orange confirmed himself as one of the best stayers in Europe when comfortably winning the Qatar Goodwood Cup — one of Britain’s oldest races have been established in 1812 — for the second year running.

The 11/4 favourite was given a front-running ride by Jamie Spencer and stayed on to win from Pallasator.

“He wears his heart on his sleeve,” said Spencer. “He’s a big strong galloper and he’s got stronger since last year and can sustain top speed for longer.

“I’m not convinced this is his track. On flat tracks he’s much better as you can really let him at it, but you have to slow down for the bends here.

“Last year he was a very good horse, but this year he is stronger. They came at him from a really early stage and he went away from them at the finish. The other thing that would help is faster ground, as it was shifting a bit under him today and he’d have been happier if it was quick.”

Dubai confidence improves further as commercial permits rise 16.3%

Commercial permits issued by the Department of Economic Development (DED) in Dubai to companies for various activities like marketing campaigns, sales promotions and exhibitions increased 16.3 per cent over the first six months of 2016 compared to the first half of 2015.

Altogether 13,566 commercial permits were issued by DED in H1 2016, indicating robust business development efforts and competition among firms to sustain business and connect with existing as well as potential customers.

A total of 389 permits were issued for exhibitions during H1 2016 compared to 210 permits recorded during the first half of 2015. Permits issued for companies to engage in multiple promotional activities increased 33.3 per cent – from 1,807 in H1 2015 to 2,408 in Hi 2016 – indicating a strong demand for diverse marketing strategies.

Permits for promotional campaigns issued during H1 2016 also increased 13.6 per cent compared to the same period of the previous year and reached 3,664, while permits for business forums rose 14.3 per cent to reach 136 as Dubai strengthened its credentials as a destination for new projects and businesses.

Dubai also continued to enhance its appeal as a business networking hub with an 85 per cent increase in permits for major trade fairs, largely driven by convenient electronic procedures introduced by DED. As per the procedures, host companies can get commercial permits issued directly without depending on outsourcing or third party companies.

The Dubai World Trade Centre accounted for 52 per cent of the total exhibitions and conferences permitted during H1 2016, with Crowne Plaza Hotel (5 per cent) in second place and the third place shared by Jumeirah Emirates towers and The Address and Dubai Marina (4 per cent each).

Ease and flexibility of procedures encourage business owners to take advantage of the opportunities and promote their products through various campaigns. Advertising campaigns particularly witnessed a 32.3 growth during the first six months of 2016, indicating significant retailing activity as well as healthy competition and business development efforts among businesses.

Omar Bushahab, CEO of Business Registration & Licensing in DED, said the increase in commercial permits issued shows the ease and flexibility of the procedures followed by the Department of Economic Development to facilitate issuance of such permits.

“Clearly, confidence levels are high among business owners in Dubai while on the other hand there is growing competition among businesses. We will work to strengthen strategic business partnerships and facilitate commercial activity to support economic development and policy-making aimed to reinforce Dubai as a hub of growth and sustainable development,” Bushahab concluded.

Bushahab added that the intense competition is prompting businesses in Dubai to look at efficient and innovative marketing strategies, including advertising campaigns, exhibitions and sales promotions.

UAE fuel prices down for August

Abu Dhabi: Fuel prices in the UAE were reduced for the month of August, the Ministry of Energy announced on Thursday.

The new per litre fuel prices are Super 98-Dh1.73, down from Dh1.88 in July; Special 95-Dh1.62, down from Dh1.77; and E Plus-91-Dh1.55, down from Dh1.70.

The diesel price has been reduced from Dh1.85 per litre in July to Dh1.76 for August.

The prices will come into effect on August 1.

Fuel prices are linked to international average crude prices, which have been plunging after recovering in the last few months.

From less than $30 per barrel in January, oil prices moved up to $50 per barrel last month.

On Thursday, international benchmark Brent crude was trading at around $44 per barrel with the West Texas Intermediate of the US at around $42 per barrel.

The outlook for the industry remains weak as crude producers continue to pump out more than the market can consume.

The fuel prices are calculated based on the average global prices for diesel and petrol with the addition of operating costs and profit margins of the distributing companies in the UAE.

The Ministry of Energy liberalised fuel prices last year in July in an effort to reduce emissions and encourage people to use public transport.

Dubai's The Tower undergo strength test: Wind tunnel and seismic assessment

Emaar Properties today announced the successful completion of advanced wind tunnel tests to confirm the structural strength and durability of the iconic new tower in Dubai Creek Harbour, which will define a brand-new skyline for the city.

A comprehensive array of never-before wind tunnel tests for The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour was commissioned, which will feature world-class observation decks, luxury accommodation and retail attractions. With wind being a major challenge in the development of high-rises, especially at very high altitudes, these tests are crucial in defining the final height and design aspects.

For the wind tunnel testing of The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour, up to 12 different analysis and testing methods were used to ensure that all possible cases are considered, guaranteeing the maximum quality and safety of the structure.

These tests are made for the entirety of the project with a full scaled model, and also on different sections of the project to double-check the behaviour of the building and the wind around it.

Since the structure is anchored to the ground with robust cables, some of these tests are innovative and were developed for the first time in this field. Two independent and leading agencies in the world undertake the wind tunnel testing.

Additionally, the rigorous wind climate study of the area covered measurements at different heights including data provided by the weather stations. Different seismic studies were also considered and applied specifically to local ground conditions. To guarantee the maximum safety and stability of the building, the design of The Tower also includes multiple damper systems and shock absorption systems, located at different points and heights.

Mohamed Alabbar, Chairman of Emaar Properties, said: “An ambitious project on a never-before scale and design, The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour demands high-precision engineering across all its facets. As a significant value addition to Dubai Creek Harbour, the tower is billed to attract visitors from across the world, and will serve as a beacon of hope and positivity for the city and the region. Pushing the boundaries in high-rise engineering even further, The Tower’s wind tunnel tests are an industry-first of sorts, underlining our commitment to uphold the highest standards of safety.”

Santiago Calatrava Valls said: “From the materials selection to the technology used, every aspect of The Tower has been designed and developed according to the strictest international safety standards. The wind tunnel tests were an important component in the structural design stage, and we have deployed innovative engineering techniques to confirm the strength of the new icon.”

The successful completion of the wind tunnel tests as well as a comprehensive range of seismic and local climate studies lends further momentum to The Tower’s development to the highest standards of quality and safety.

This marks another milestone in the development of The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour, designed by Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava, and located in the heart of the 6sqkm master-planned community set by Dubai Creek and only 10 minutes from the Dubai International Airport.

The smart city of the future is also next-door to the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, protected under the Unesco Ramsar Convention and home to over 67 species of water birds, thus defining a unique residential destination that offers unprecedented and long-term value.

Offering unprecedented experiences for 360 degree views of the city and beyond, The Tower will feature The Pinnacle Room opening to grand views of the sky, and VIP Observation Garden Decks that recreate the splendour of the ‘Hanging Gardens of Babylon,’ one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Fully glazed rotating balconies extend outward, rotating outside the skin of the tower. The Tower will be in close proximity to a Retail District, one of the largest in the world.

Emaar has unveiled high-end residences in Dubai Creek Harbour including Dubai Creek Residences, Creekside 18, and Harbour Views homes in The Island District, a vibrant lifestyle hub.

All homes open to spectacular views. A bustling 4.5 km Creek Boardwalk envelopes the development’s Island District, assuring residents unbeatable lifestyle choices. Among the nearby amenities are event spaces, galleries, fascinating water features and a trendy Vida Hotel that all add to the quality of life.

Where to travel abroad for Dh1,500?

Some places in Asia, Europe can cost less than Dh3,000, inclusive of airfare and hotels, if you know where to look

Holidaying in some place faraway doesn’t need to break the bank.

Dubai: With the current economic environment, it’s normal for consumers to cut corners in order to stretch the household budget and save as much as they can. But it doesn’t mean holidaying to some place exotic or faraway has to take the back seat.

Travel specialists in the UAE are seeing a growing number of residents who are expressing a lot of interest to explore places without breaking the bank.

“A lot of people have become budget conscious on how much they want to spend on their holiday. [Their] budget [however} depends on the country they wish to travel,” Mariyam Kapasi, senior holiday consultant at Dubai Leisure Holidays, told Gulf News.

The good news is that there are plenty of wallet-friendly options out there that are waiting to discover. Some of them can cost a lot cheaper than the air ticket you buy when you go back home for your annual vacation.

According to travel consultants, some places as far as Sri Lanka in Asia or Madrid and Barcelona, Spain in Europe can be explored for less than Dh3,000. The price already includes the airfare, hotel accommodation and sightseeing costs.

The key to avoid creating a hole in the bank account is to do a lot of research and price comparison. “It is a misconception to believe that holidaying needs huge budgets. A lot can be planned within individual financial resources,” said Digvijay Pratap, co-founder and managing director of HolidayMe.com.

“Having planned and sold many vacations across continents, we assure prospective customers that budget constraints need not be the reason anymore for cancelling holidays.”

In terms of what places that are in demand these days, Geet Bhalla, co-founder and CEO of HolidayME.com, said UAE residents are now exploring areas that used to be unheard of.

“We have noticed that new-age travellers are not as interested in the tried and tested sun, sea and sand holidays like their previous generations. They are spending less time in major gateway cities and are instead exploring more remote destinations, staying in hostels or boutiques instead of luxury hotels and choosing cheaper modes of transport to travel,” he said.

Kapasi said some of the destinations that are hugely popular among UAE travellers these days include Georgia, Armenia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Maldives, which is still in demand among honeymooners from the Middle East market.

HolidayMe has compiled a list of examples of vacation destinations that promise to offer budget-friendly prices:

Georgia – Dh 1,600

Armenia – Dh 1,500

Azerbaijan – Dh1,800

Madrid/Barcelona – Dh2,800

Egypt – Dh1,900

Amman – Dh 2,200

Thailand – Dh 2,200

Malaysia – Dh2,300

Bali – Dh 2,500

Sri Lanka – Dh1,900

Maldives – Dh 2,500

*Prices include flights, hotels, transfers, sightseeing but are for off season and indicative/subject to availability at the time of booking

UAE launches new Moral Education initiative

Abu Dhabi: A new Moral Education initiative was launched on Wednesday under the directives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

The initiative will be included in school curricula and courses in the form of a subject entitled “Moral Education”, in cooperation and coordination with the Ministry of Education, the Abu Dhabi Education Council, and other relevant institutions.

The subject will include five key elements: ethics, personal and community development, culture and heritage, civic education, and rights and responsibilities.

The initiative includes the formation of a committee to adopt the methodology and suitable criteria for the preparation of the Moral Education subject in line with the frameworks of the UAE’s cultural identity, customs and traditions. The committee will contribute to the efforts of various institutions and authorities in developing scientific bases, educational programmes, and working mechanisms to ensure the integration of the subject into the national education curriculum.

Speaking on the occasion of the launch, Shaikh Mohammad said that the creation of a nation remains contingent on how well a nation preserves its values and morals, regardless of the level of achievement and sophistication it has attained.

Shaikh Mohammad said that the UAE is unique in its legacy, deeply rooted in its cultural identity, national and moral values, based on the principles of its ancestors. This legacy stems from the UAE’s culture, and is deeply grounded on the values of tolerance, respect, cooperation, community service, giving and sacrifice.

Shaikh Mohammad reaffirmed the growing role of education in creating and shaping future generations that are balanced, proactive, and ambitious. “Through reinforcing values that have enabled the UAE to become what it is now, and through highlighting our national role models and the remarkable achievements of human history, we hope to present those lessons to future generations,” he said.

9-month delay was a blessing in disguise, Solar Impulse 2 pilots say

During Pacific crossing, PIccard disregarded mission control’s advice to return after a glitch was noticed

Pilots Bertrand Piccard (R) and Andre Borschberg wave during a press conference after the Solar Impulse 2 aircraft landed at Al Bateen Airport in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi: What was perceived as a disappointing experience in the midst of an ambitious project later turned into a blessing in disguise, teaching more lessons about life’s mysteries and human attitudes towards it.

This was the most touching experience of Bertrand Piccard, the Swiss adventurer who made history on Tuesday by successfully flying the final leg of the first zero-fuel electric and solar aircraft’s circumnavigation across the globe.

He was elated when the airplane, which started its epic journey in March 2015, successfully crossed the Pacific in its toughest leg after many delays and landed in Hawaii in the US on June 28, 2015. But then it was disappointing to face an unexpected hurdle in the form of damaged batteries. It took around nine months to fix this and continue the journey on April 21, 2016. Piccard and his colleague, André Borschberg, CEO and co-founder of Solar Impulse, spent that time in awareness activities for clean energy promotion, the very aim of the project.

When they resumed the flight from Hawaii, they realised that discussions about Si2 were starting to shift towards a clean energy promotion initiative rather than an aviation adventure. “By the end of the final stage, everything mentioned about the solar plane was about clean energy’s potential,” Piccard told Gulf News. He realised that finally the purpose was already served. The intensive awareness activities conducted during the break played a major role in it. The hurdle caused by the damaged battery turned into a blessing in disguise, he told Gulf News in an interview.

That reminded him of another similar experience during his balloon trip a few years ago, which was denied direct flight path by the Chinese Government due to certain technical reasons. “I had to take detour and it was a disappointing experience.” But at the end he realised that the detour made him win a record of flying the longest balloon trip of that kind.

“We don’t know what life has in store [for us]. We have to be open to understand it [and take advantage of it],” Piccard said about the greatest experiences of his adventures.

This positive attitude makes the impossible possible, André Borschberg told Gulf News. “You can approach a glass as half-full or half-empty,” he said while explaining his experience.

When he started flying the toughest leg over the Pacific after a long delay, the engineering team informed him that an important gadget was missing in the cockpit. He was advised to fly back and fix it but then he would miss the perfect weather window then available for the around five-day-long crucial flight.

‘Tough decision’

He decided to go ahead with the flight against the wishes of his family, engineers and friends. “It was a hard moment but after one day I could get total control of the situation. I started enjoying each moment.”

He said it was a tough decision. “But if you look at the problems only, you cannot do anything,” said the pilot who created many records for that successful flight.

Piccard said he was happy that many Gulf News readers were constantly following Solar Impulse 2. Asked if he had any message for them, he said: “Be open to new ideas…be pioneers in your own life. Then we can create a better world.”

Dubai Business Confidence up 7.4 points versus Q2 2015: DED

Expectations of acquiring new projects, orders, improvement in market conditions, higher demand due to the festival season and new customers have had a significant impact on the overall business outlook in Dubai, as shown in the quarterly business survey conducted by the Department of Economic Development (DED).

The composite Business Confidence Index (BCI) of Dubai firms rose to 117.5 points during the second quarter (Q2) of 2016, up 7.4 points from the same quarter of 2015 and also higher than the Q1 2016 index score of 116.5.

Businesses generally were optimistic on sales and volumes as 44 per cent of those surveyed (500 firms) expected the situation to improve, against 39 per cent in the first quarter on 2016, and another 44 per cent expecting stability to prevail. While 48 per cent of the businesses in Dubai expect their sales volume to increase in the third quarter of 2016, 37 per cent anticipate volumes to hold steady.

A comparison of the forecast for Q3 2016 versus that for Q2 2016 shows that all parameters, except the selling prices index, have maintained a steady trend. The net balance for selling prices has increased from 1 per cent for Q2 2016 to 5 per cent for Q3 2016 on the back of rising raw material costs and projections of improvement in demand. The net balance for sales volume stands at 33 per cent for Q3 2016, higher than the 27 per cent for Q3 2015 and 31 per cent for Q2 2016.

In line with the emirate’s growing profile as a manufacturing hub and source market for finished products, the manufacturing sector was the most optimistic across all parameters – revenues, volumes, selling prices, employment, profitability as well as new purchase orders for the third quarter of 2016.

Confidence on receiving new orders, contracts, projects both from the government and private sectors and an increase in demand are the major factors keeping manufacturers buoyant compared to their counterparts in the trading and services sectors. Within the manufacturing sector, furniture and plastics manufacturers hold the strongest outlook for volumes.

The transportation sub-segment of the services sector is the most optimistic for Q3 2016, while the travel and hospitality segment is the least optimistic about their volumes. Within the trading sector, the most optimistic segments are computers, auto, construction materials and food & beverages.

The current survey also shows that large companies continue to be more optimistic compared to SMEs, with composite BCI scores of 121.8 and 111.0 points respectively. Although marginally less optimistic compared to the overall business community (117.5), exporters are more confident than domestic-market oriented firms with respect to revenues, volumes, profits and purchase orders but are less optimistic about selling prices and employment.

Competition, market conditions, delayed payments and rental/leasing costs were among the main challenges cited by most businesses. The proportion of businesses that intend to invest in capacity expansion and technology upgrades has gone up in Q2 2016 compared to the previous quarter; 69 per cent of the companies plan to invest in expansion of capacity in Q2 2016 versus 61 per cent in Q1 2016 and 65 per cent intend to upgrade technology in Q2 2016 versus 57 per cent in Q1 2016.

With respect to innovation, 88 per cent of the businesses said that they have not implemented any type of innovation in their businesses. Of the remaining, 40 per cent indicated that the main purpose for implementing innovation was quality improvement. 87 per cent of the firms did not have any provision for research and development (R&D). Of the 13 per cent that had an ongoing budget or made provisions for R&D, 29 per cent had budgeted more than 10 per cent of their sales towards this end.

DED conducts the quarterly surveys as an effective tool to measure the pulse of the business community and allow the government and the private sector to track and analyse major trends and issues that have a bearing on economic activity in Dubai.

The Q2 2016 (April – June) survey covered 500 companies in Dubai. The companies were asked to indicate if they anticipated an ‘increase,’ ‘decrease,’ or ‘no change’ in key indicators such as sales revenues, selling prices, volumes sold, profits and number of employees.

New York based comedian Radhika Vaz is back in Dubai with her hit show ‘Older.Angrier. Hairier.’ ! Hilarious, irreverent, and always on the money, ‘Older. Angrier. Hairier.’ is a trip through the mind of a woman who refuses to take life too seriously – mainly because that wouldn’t be funny.

Amir ElSaffar: Rivers of Sound Large Ensemble | UAE Debut

When / April 30, 2016, 8pm

Where / East Plaza, The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi

Tickets NOW available on our website below:

http://www.nyuad-artscenter.org/en_US/events/2016/amir-elsaffar-2/

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

Amir ElSaffar’s 17-member big band moves beyond the notions of style and tradition into a realm of uninhibited musical communication, working in a broad spectrum ranging from Iraqi maqam to American jazz.

The Rivers of Sound Large Ensemble is deeply rooted in musical forms of Iraq and nearby regions but still speaks the language of swing, improvisation and group interaction, resulting in a sound distinct from other contemporary cross-cultural musical fusions. The group embraces a broad spectrum of traditions, from Iraqi maqam to American jazz, on a range of instruments including the Middle Eastern oud, buzuq, santur (hammered dulcimer), jowza (spike fiddle), and percussion, arrayed with the piano, bass and drums of jazz, along with trumpet, saxophones, oboe, strings, and voice. Rivers of Sound combines the modal language of the maqam with the aesthetics of contemporary music and jazz to create a new musical vocabulary. This exploration of pure resonance allows the assembled musicians to explore and experiment together along a continuum of sound encompassing timbre, harmony, pitch and rhythm. Having developed an instinctive ease with ElSaffar’s highly complex music, the band plays with a creativity that transcends pure technical challenge in a style that is rooted in tradition, while creating an entirely new aesthetic. As pitches and rhythms become fluid, so do cultural boundaries: elements that traditionally divide musicians and genre specific modes are recontextualized in a fresh cross cultural landscape.

Dubai Health Authority has record patient turnout

Over half a million patients availed of medical services at four hospitals and facilities

Dubai: Patient footfall in hospitals run by the Dubai Health Authority is likely to rise substantially this year.

More than 524,000 patients visited the DHA-run hospitals in the first half of 2016, DHA officials said. This number will go up by the end of the year as the four DHA-run hospitals and speciality centres received over one million patients last year.

Dr Ahmad Bin Kalban, CEO of Hospital Services Sector, said: “In 2016, in the first half itself, we have seen a high volume of patients; this includes outpatients, accident and emergency cases, walk-in visits as well as admissions. All DHA hospitals have a high occupancy rate and this reflects the quality of services and the trust that we have built with our patients.”

Bin Kalban added that focusing on being patient-centric is a priority at DHA and that in line with their health strategy 2016-2021, the DHA will continue to expand its services as well as provide specialised and super-specialised care to the residents and visitors alike.

The total number of patients that visited Dubai, Rashid, Latifa and Hatta hospitals in the first half of 2016 was 524,892. Of these, almost 38 per cent (199,450 patients) visited Dubai Hospital, 12 per cent (64,596 patients) visited Hatta Hospital, 33 per cent (173,833 patients) Rashid Hospital and almost 17 per cent (87,013 patients) Latifa Hospital.

The total number of outpatient visits across these facilities were 280,766; the total number of accident and emergency cases and walk-ins were 202,598 and the remaining 41,528 were admissions.

The DHA will continue to expand its health services to keep up with the population growth. The projects will enhance geographical access to health care. As per the DHA’s Health Strategy, the authority will focus on preventive care as well as specialised care.

Desert Rose City to bloom soon in Dubai

Municipality gives go-ahead for implementation of Dh30b smart, sustainable satellite city

Dubai: Dubai Municipality has given the go-ahead for the implementation of the Desert Rose City, a smart and sustainable satellite city project that was announced in 2014.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, director-general of Dubai Municipality, on Monday said in a press release that the project has been given the green signal in line with the vision of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

He also announced the formation of a committee headed by Abdullah Raffia, assistant director-general for Engineering and Planning Sector, to supervise the studies, designs and the construction of the satellite city and follow up its implementation at all levels.

Consisting of building clusters in the shape of a desert flower, the Dh30 billion mixed-used development will come up on an area of 14,000 hectares on the Dubai-Al Ain Road.

Once complete, it is expected to accommodate 160,000 residents who will work and live in the city that will be surrounded by a green belt.

There will be 20,000 plots for building luxury homes for Emiratis and 10,000 affordable housing units for expatriates. The city will rely on its own resources to provide means of transport and communications, energy consumption and recycled water. It will have resources to provide more than 40,000 cubic meters of potable water.

Dawood Al Hajeri, director of the Planning Department, said the Desert Rose City will be a sustainable city that produces 200 megawatts of electricity using solar panels on the rooftops of homes and other buildings.

The project will be implemented progressively, complying with the emirate’s green building code, and will have eco-friendly solutions like green roofs to mitigate temperatures and purify the air from pollutants.

Al Hajeri said that the importance of the green building project lies in reducing carbon emissions and improving the internal environment and air quality, thereby improving the health of the community. The city will also have sustainable transport solutions that will further reduce the carbon emission.

The first phase of the project is expected to be complete before Dubai hosts the World Expo 2020.

Rain, hail hit parts of UAE

Dubai: Residents reported heavy rain, accompanied by hail, in parts of Sharjah and Al Ain on Monday afternoon as the rest of the country sizzled in the summer heat.

Al Maliha in central Sharjah and Masaken in Al Ain received heavy showers on Monday afternoon, according to the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS).

“This is the effect of the extension of low pressure coming from the east in the surface and upper layer of air. These clouds developing near the mountains, to the east of the UAE, are convective clouds and they are moving gradually towards the Maliha, Al Ain and Al Dhaid, and Al Faqa areas,” a forecaster from NCMS told Gulf News.

Light to heavy rain clouds were spotted in areas between Margham and Al Madam and in areas surrounding Al Faqa, based on satellite monitoring by NCMS, as of 3.40pm Monday. Al Buraimi, near the border with Oman, showed clouds that carry very light showers.

Some residents posted videos of rain with hail in Maliha, while others said the downpour was so heavy on Dubai-Al Ain Road that they had to stop their cars car due to poor visibility.

“Hail can be expected when there are convective clouds. I cannot say this is normal or not normal. But this has happened many times before. If you have convective clouds, there are chances of rain, sometimes accompanied by hail,” the forecaster said.

The maximum recorded rainfall as of 3.30pm was 10mm at Khatam Al Shakla, near the border with Oman.

The forecaster said that the rain clouds would continue to give different intensities of rain for the next two hours.

Motorists are urged to drive with caution, as heavy to strong winds could blow up sand and dust.

Similar conditions may prevail over the country on Tuesday.

Emiratis in Turkey safe — UAE ministry

Dubai Municipality officials attend Unesco heritage meeting that resumed on Sunday

Rashad Bukhash, Abdul Aziz Al Musallam and other UAE officials at the 40th session of the World Heritage Committee of Unesco in Istanbul.

Abu Dhabi/Dubai: The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has assured that all Emiratis still in Turkey are safe.

“The ministry would like to assure all Emirates who have relatives, family, and friends in Turkey that everyone is safe and fine,” Mohammad Meer Al Raisi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said in an official statement.

“The UAE Embassy in Ankara as well as the Consulate General in Istanbul are in contact with all the Emiratis who are in Turkey and called for help, in addition to those who are registered in ‘Tawagodi’, which is a service provided by the ministry for the citizens who are travelling abroad.”

Al Raisi added that “from the beginning of the crisis, the Consul General of the UAE was present in Istanbul airport, where he assisted 28 Emiratis after their flight back to the UAE was postponed. They were all transported from the airport to suitable hotels in Istanbul [and they were] waiting [for resumption of] flight services.”

In addition, the official urged all citizens planning to travel to Turkey to wait until the situation calms down and everything goes back to normal. “If any person is forced to travel, he/she must register on ‘Tawagodi’ service before travelling, and memorise all important numbers such as that of the UAE embassy in Ankara, and consulate in Istanbul.”

Khalifa Abdul Rahman Al Marzouqi, Consul-General of the UAE in Istanbul, confirmed over phone that “all Emiratis are safe, and all the needed help was provided for the 28 Emiratis, including children, women, and elderly people, who were stuck at the airport on the day the [coup attempt] took place. ‏”

According to a senior Dubai Municipality official who is currently in Istanbul, more than 70 Emiratis still in Turkey are safe and in constant touch with the UAE Embassy officials.

A group of experts in architectural heritage from the UAE had flown to Istanbul to attend the 40th session of the World Heritage Committee of Unesco that began on July 10.

Rashad Bukhash, director of the Architectural Heritage Department at Dubai Municipality, who is leading the UAE delegation, was all praise for the UAE diplomats in Turkey for the service extended to Emiratis stranded at the airport after the military coup attempt.

Those returning to Sharjah on Friday night had to be deplaned and were stranded in the airport for several hours, he said.

“They were in the plane when the coup took place that night and they had to come down and stay in the airport for some hours,” Bukhash said over phone from Istanbul.

The UAE Embassy officials had swung into action and arranged hotel accommodation for the affected passengers. Senior diplomats personally assisted the stranded Emiratis, he noted.

“Some are still in the hotel and some have managed to come back to the UAE. Many citizens came back yesterday and today,” said Bukhash.

He said about 70 to 100 Emiratis are still in Turkey and the UAE Embassy has been doing its best to ensure their safety.

“We have a WhatsApp group where consular officials are also there. So, we are in constant touch. We are exchanging information and updates [about the situation in the country],” he said.

The annual meeting of the World Heritage Committee, which was put on hold on Saturday, resumed on Sunday. The meeting which was supposed to run until Wednesday concluded on Sunday.

Bukhash, two other officials from his department and Abdul Aziz Al Musallam, chairman of Sharjah Heritage Institute, attended the 40th session on Sunday. “Everything is OK now. We will be coming back tomorrow,” Bukhash said.
