Celebrate Harry Potter’s birthday in Dubai next week

Jamie Parker plays the grown-up Harry Potter in a new play about the wizard, which has its world premiere in London in July 30.

Harry Potter fans living in the UAE will have a triple celebration this Sunday — if they wake up early enough.

A new book about the wizard’s adult life — Harry Potter and the Cursed Child — releases at 3am in the UAE, simultaneously with the midnight launch in London, falling on the birthdays of both Potter himself and his creator, J. K. Rowling.

The book is in fact the script of a West End play telling the story of Potter and his friends and family, who are now adults. The play has its world premiere in London on June 30, although it has been in previews, during which the cast and crew fine-tune the script based on the reactions of a real audience, for the past month. It has had rave reviews.

Virgin Megastore Mall of the Emirates will be open to the public from 1.30am on July 31 for the event, which organisers tell us will have a party atmosphere and “surprises”.

According to the Pottermore website, home of everything Potter and Rowling, the book is the “Special Rehearsal Edition script” — a first look at the script “used by the cast and creative team during rehearsals and previews”.

The Definitive Edition of the script is set for release in early 2017, replacing the Special Rehearsal Edition.

It appears to be plans to make Cursed Child into a film, too, although Rowling has promised it should remain a play. Warner Bros., producers of the Harry Potter films (and the upcoming Fantastic Beasts movies) filed for a Cursed Child trademark in the UK this week.
