Rawal plays the astute businessman Kishanlal who decides to go the legal route when his business incurs a loss in the play Krishan Vs Kanhaiya, on November 4 and 5 at Ductac.
“This play makes you question age-old beliefs with logical answers … It’s an important play for mankind and is filled with drama, fantasy and satire,” said director Umesh Shukla over email.
His lead actor agrees and believes that the viewers might become wiser after watching this thought-provoking play, which inspired the hit Bollywood film OMG – Oh My God!, which did not release in the UAE. Excerpts from our interview with the award-winning actor Rawal.
What should we expect from Krishan Vs Kanhaiya?
Expect a divine comedy filled with satirical twists. It will force you to think about theories that you have taken for granted for years. There are many things in life that you keep on doing without thinking about it or questioning it. For instance, somebody has to told you to follow a certain set of beliefs, but you have never examined it. It also makes you think about your faith and religion. This play will make you wiser. It will also make you disturbed. We have been doing this play in temples, even for the MPs in India, and it was met with great success each and every time.
But when people are nudged to question their faith and religion, how do you ensure that it doesn’t offend anyone?
I have staged over 450 shows and I have realised that people can come up with anything. But you should never deprive people who are willing to think. A few people cannot snatch away your freedom to view, assimilate and analyse things. Everybody should have the mental faculty to think. The true humour is when you make people laugh and you make them think, moments later.
When you have done over 450 shows, how do you ensure that there’s no monotony creeping in?
It’s our job to stage these shows multiple times. Theatre has always been my first love, my life and I am always excited about plays.
What’s your brand of humour?
I am not a fan of double-meaning jokes. When there’s a double-meaning joke, there’s usually just one meaning, so you may never see me be a part of such a film. But remember these films are successful, so who am I to judge them?
What’s the belief that you have seen people practise that irritates you?
Lack of education irritates me. And by that, I mean what’s the point of having a degree in your hand or a PhD and then spitting on the road? What is the point of being educated when you have no civic sense.
What prompted you to join politics and the Bharatiya Janata Party?
I joined politics to support Mr [Narendra] Modi because this country has found a rare prime minister in him. I wanted to contribute and be on his side.
Would he approve?
He hasn’t seen the play, but when I performed in front of the ministers they all loved it.
It’s not your first time to the UAE. What are your observations about the audience here?
We always get a warm reception and they are hungry for good plays. Initially, I used to stage plays in small halls, but now the venues have changed and they are meant for staging theatrical plays. It’s an indication that the audience is receptive to good plays.
But in this era of social media, how difficult is to capture your viewer’s attention? And is it annoying to see them check their phones?
It’s absolutely annoying. We repeatedly tell the audience to switch off their phones, but it doesn’t work. The only thing left is to put jammers, but we don’t want to be that severe.
Don’t miss it!
