Mohammad unveils Future Accelerators programme

12-week programme connects top companies and innovative entrepreneurs with powerful partners in Dubai

Dubai: His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Monday inaugurated the Dubai Future Accelerators (DFA) programme.

The DFA programme aims to cement Dubai’s and the UAE’s position as an international hub for designing the future.

On September 28, Shaikh Mohammad launched the UAE Strategy for the Future that includes a comprehensive road map to take the UAE into the next era of development.

Addressing the gathering at the opening of the DFA programme, Shaikh Mohammad said: “We are embarking on a new era, establishing a government that proactively plans for the future.”

The DFA is an intensive 12-week programme that connects top companies and innovative entrepreneurs with powerful partners in Dubai to develop new and innovative solutions.

There are eight accelerators to prototype the future of eight key strategic sectors in Dubai, he added.

The programme attracted more than 2,200 innovative submissions to the DFA’s first round, proving the UAE’s attractiveness to the world’s brightest minds. Thirty innovative companies are collaborating with government departments to develop transformative projects with multi-billion dollar potential.

Shaikh Mohammad said, “Our goal is to redefine the government’s role, whereby government entities become centres for planning the future and catalysing global innovation. Our philosophy is to turn every single dirham the government spends in developing its sectors into a dirham invested in the future.”

Shaikh Mohammad said that he would personally follow up on the accelerators’ projects and investments. “We must be agents of change and be part of the rapid scientific and technological changes instead of just keeping pace with them.”

“Our goal of these accelerators is to anticipate challenges, capitalise on opportunities, and design the future. I invite everybody to think differently when dealing with developmental challenges.”

Shaikh Mohammad opened a headquarters of the Emirates NBD, which is managed and all its services provided using artificial intelligence systems and without employees. “This is will be the bank of the future,” he said.

Under the DFA programme, Dubai Municipality will work with technology companies to grow food using aeroponics, the process of growing plants in an air or mist environment without the use of soil, within Dubai.

Dubai Police will introduce systems that rely on genetic, biological and behavioural data to help identify and track down outlaws.

The Dubai Health Authority will use genomics and analytical science as well as remote therapeutic techniques to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of medical diagnosis.

The Roads and Transport Authority will develop a self-driving system for public transport in Dubai. It will also study the application of the Hyperloop train technology in Dubai.

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority will work on the cooling system using solar energy to reduce cooling energy consumption by 30 per cent.
